Abstract

A personal digital ID device provides a digital identifier to a service for a predetermined duration in response to user interaction. The user interaction may include a button press. The personal digital ID device may be in the form of a bracelet, a key fob, or other form factor. The service may be provided by a mobile device, in the cloud, or elsewhere.

Claims (33)

1. A personal digital ID card comprising:

a crypto/cipher engine having at least one digital identifier;

a button accessible to a user of the personal digital ID card;

a motion sensor to allow for user authentication when the personal digital ID card undergoes a predefined motion;

a near field radio to communicate with a point-of-sale device;

a non-near field radio to communicate with a mobile phone; and

a processor coupled to the crypto/cipher engine, the button, the motion sensor, the near field radio, and the non-near field radio, the processor configured to validate a user through motion of the personal digital ID card and to turn on the non-near field radio for a predetermined duration for communication with the mobile phone in response to user interaction with the button;

wherein the crypto/cipher engine makes available the digital identifier to perform authentication with a cloud service in communication with the mobile phone while the non-near field radio is on, and the crypto/cipher engine makes available the digital identifier using the near field radio to perform authentication with the point-of-sale device.

2. The personal digital ID card of claim 1 wherein the processor is configured to detect motion, validate the user, and turn on the non-near field radio in response to one press of the button.

3. The personal digital ID card of claim 1 wherein the processor is configured to detect motion, validate the user, and turn on the non-near field radio in response to two presses of the button.

4. The personal digital ID card of claim 1 wherein the processor is configured to detect motion, validate the user, and turn on the non-near field radio in response to a button press lasting longer than a predetermined threshold.

5. The personal digital ID card of claim 1 wherein the near-field radio comprises an IS014443 compatible radio.

6. The personal digital ID card of claim 1 wherein the near-field radio comprises an IS018092 compatible radio.

7. The personal digital ID card of claim 1 wherein the crypto/cipher engine comprises a smartcard secure element.

8. The personal digital ID card of claim 7 wherein the at least one digital identifier comprises an encryption key.

9. A personal digital ID card comprising:

a crypto/cipher engine having at least one digital identifier;

a battery;

a button accessible to a user of the personal digital ID card;

a motion sensor to allow for user authentication when the personal digital ID card undergoes a predefined motion;

a near field radio to communicate with a point-of-sale device;

a non-near field radio to communicate with a mobile phone; and

a processor coupled to the crypto/cipher engine, the button, the motion sensor, the battery, the near field radio, and the non-near field radio, the processor configured to validate a user through motion of the personal digital ID card and to turn on the non-near field radio for a predetermined duration for communication with the mobile phone in response to a first user interaction with the button and to report a battery charge level in response to a second user interaction with the button;

wherein the crypto/cipher engine makes available the digital identifier to perform authentication with a cloud service in communication with the mobile phone while the non-near field radio is on, and the crypto/cipher engine makes available the digital identifier using the near field radio to perform authentication with the point-of-sale device.

10. The personal digital ID card of claim 9 further comprising at least two non-red light emitting diodes (LEDs), and wherein the processor reports the battery charge level by illuminating a number of the at least two non-red LEDs.

The personal digital ID card of claim 9 further comprising a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) coupled to the processor, wherein at least one of the plurality of LEDs is red, and more than one of the plurality of LEDs are non-red, and wherein the processor reports a low battery charge level by illuminating the at least one red LED.

12. The personal digital ID card of claim 11 wherein the plurality of LEDs are located in a line on an exterior surface of the personal digital ID device.

13. The personal digital ID card of claim 9 wherein the crypto/cipher engine comprises a smartcard secure element.

14. The personal digital ID card of claim 13 wherein the at least one digital identifier comprises an encryption key.

15. The personal digital ID card of claim 13 wherein the at least one digital identifier comprises a certificate.

16. The personal digital ID card of claim 9 wherein the processor is configured to report the battery charge level in response to one press of the button.

17. The personal digital ID card of claim 9 wherein the processor is configured to report the battery charge level in response to two presses of the button.

18. The personal digital ID card of claim 9 wherein the processor is configured to report the battery charge level in response to a button press lasting longer than a predetermined threshold.
