Abstract

An audio-video communication system comprises a wireless exterior module located proximate an entrance, a computerized controller running a software application, and a remote peripheral device. The wireless exterior module includes a proximity sensor for detecting a person at the entrance, a video camera for recording an image of the person at the entrance, a microphone for recording the person at the entrance, a speaker for playing audio to the person at the entrance, a transmitter for communicating sounds and images of the person at the entrance, and a receiver for receiving communications at the wireless exterior module. The computerized controller is disposed in wireless electronic communication with the wireless exterior module via the transmitter and the receiver of the wireless exterior module. The remote peripheral device is configured to electronically communicate with the computerized controller for viewing an image from the video camera communicated from the wireless exterior module.

Claims (34)

1. A method for monitoring an entrance comprising:

(a) transmitting streaming video data wirelessly from an exterior device comprising a camera, a microphone, a speaker, a proximity detector, and a keypad having one or more buttons, wherein the transmitting is after one or more buttons on the keypad of the exterior device is pressed;

(b) receiving the streaming video data wirelessly using a software application running on at least one peripheral device, which is a cell phone;

(c) displaying the streaming video data transmitted wirelessly by the exterior device using the software application running on the at least one peripheral device;

(d) receiving audio data from the entrance from the at least one peripheral device running the software application, the audio data transmitted wirelessly by the exterior device;

(e) sending a message to the software application running on the at least one peripheral device after one or more buttons on the keypad of the exterior device is pressed or a person is detected by the proximity detector;

administering user access on the software application; and

defining a hierarchy of storage that is wirelessly accessible.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

sending a detection message to the software application running on the at least one peripheral device after the proximity detector detects a person at the entrance, displaying the detection message before video is displayed on the software application.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the transmitting is after the message is received at the at least one peripheral device.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

defining a redundant system for the hierarchy of storage; and

storing a recording of the video data in the redundant system.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

communicating with an electronically actuated lock.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising:

controlling the electronically actuated lock remotely by the at least one peripheral device.

7. The method of claim 5 further comprising:

configuring a secondary exterior device that communicates with the electronically actuated lock using short-range RF waves, the secondary exterior device comprising a keypad with a plurality of buttons.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprising:

defining access codes for the secondary exterior device.

9. The method of claim 8 further comprising:

actuating the electronically actuated lock upon entry of a valid access code.

10. A system for controlling access to a premises comprising:

an electronically actuated lock;

an exterior device comprising a keypad with one or more buttons;

a computerized controller for communicating with the electronically actuated lock using short-range RF waves, wherein the computerized controller is wirelessly coupled to a router; and

a software application running on at least one peripheral device for communicating with the computerized controller,

wherein the electronically actuated lock can be actuated remotely using the software application on the at least one peripheral device or can be actuated via voice recognition, and

wherein one or more access codes to actuate the electronically actuated lock are defined using the software application, and wherein the one or more access codes are entered on the exterior device, and

wherein the software application is configured to send a text message comprising the one or more access codes to actuate the electronically actuated lock and privileges are defined by level of access to a door associated with the electronically actuated lock.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein an administrator is notified when a valid access code is entered on the exterior device.

12. The system of claim 10 wherein the electronically actuated lock is actuated remotely by an occupant as defined by the system.
