Abstract

Disclosed are various examples for network printer detection and authentication for managed device deployment. In one example, a computing environment can access a listing of network printers received from a printer discovery service executed in an enterprise device in an intranet behind a firewall. A user group associated with a client device enrolled with a management service can be identified as well as at least one of the network printers assigned to the user group. The client device can be remotely configured to access the at least one of the network printers assigned to the user group.

Claims (46)

1. A system for printer discovery and device printer configuration, comprising:

at least one computing device; and

program instructions executable in the at least one computing device that, when executed, cause the at least one computing device to:

receive, from a printer discovery service within an intranet by a management service outside of the intranet: a listing of a plurality of network printers within the intranet, and configuration data required for client devices to access a respective printer of the plurality of network printers;

direct, by the management service, an agent application to configure the client device to access the at least one of the plurality of network printers based on the configuration data; receive, by the management service, a print job from the client device, the print job specifying at least one document;

transmit, by the management service, the print job to a network printer of the plurality of network printers to perform a print operation of the at least one document;

receive, by the management service from the client device, a unique identifier that indicates the client device is within an area where the unique identifier is wirelessly broadcast, wherein the unique identifier is wirelessly broadcast based on the print job being transmitted to the network printer and the unique identifier is unique to at least one of: the print job, and the network printer; and

transmit, from the management service to the network printer, an authorization to perform the print operation based on the unique identifier being received.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the printer discovery service is configured to:

identify an internet protocol (IP) address for each of the plurality of network printers through a domain controller executable on an on-premise server within the intranet; and

access printer configuration data from each of the plurality of network printers using the IP address for each of the plurality of network printers.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the printer discovery service is further configured to send the printer configuration data obtained from each of the plurality of network printers from the on-premise server to the at least one computing device for access by the management service.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the client device is not bound to an internet protocol (IP) address associated with the intranet.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein a specification of the network printer is identified from a listing of the plurality of network printers.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the unique identifier is wirelessly broadcast from the at least one of the plurality of network printers using at least one of: radio-frequency identification (RFID), Bluetooth®, ZigBee®, near-field communication (NFC), infrared (IR), or wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi).

7. A non-transitory computer-readable medium for printer discovery and device printer configuration embodying program instructions executable in at least one computing device that, when executed, cause the at least one computing device to:

receive, from a printer discovery service within an intranet by a management service outside of the intranet: a listing of a plurality of network printers within the intranet, and configuration data required for client devices to access a respective printer of the plurality of network printers;

direct, by the management service, an agent application to configure the client device to access the at least one of the plurality of network printers based on the configuration data;

receive, by the management service, a print job from the client device, the print job specifying at least one document;

transmit, by the management service, the print job to a network printer of the plurality of network printers to perform a print operation of the at least one document;

receive, by the management service from the client device, a unique identifier that indicates the client device is within an area where the unique identifier is wirelessly broadcast, wherein the unique identifier is wirelessly broadcast based on the print job being transmitted to the network printer and the unique identifier is unique to at least one of: the print job, and the network printer; and

transmit, from the management service to the network printer, an authorization to perform the print operation based on the unique identifier being received.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the printer discovery service is configured to:

identify an internet protocol (IP) address for each of the plurality of network printers through a domain controller executable on an on-premise server within the intranet; and

access printer configuration data from each of the plurality of network printers using the IP address for each of the plurality of network printers.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the printer discovery service is further configured to send the printer configuration data obtained from each of the plurality of network printers from the on-premise server to the at least one computing device for access by the management service.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the client device is not bound to an internet protocol (IP) address associated with the intranet.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the unique identifier is wirelessly broadcast from the at least one of the plurality of network printers using at least one of: radio-frequency identification (RFID), Bluetooth®, ZigBee®, near-field communication (NFC), infrared (IR), or wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi).

12. A computer-implemented method for printer discovery and device printer configuration, comprising:

receiving, from a printer discovery service within an intranet by a management service outside of the intranet: a listing of a plurality of network printers within the intranet, and configuration data required for client devices to access a respective printer of the plurality of network printers;

directing, by the management service, an agent application to configure the client device to access the at least one of the plurality of network printers based on the configuration data;

receiving, by the management service, a print job from the client device, the print job specifying at least one document;

transmitting, by the management service, the print job to a network printer of the plurality of network printers to perform a print operation of the at least one document;

receiving, by the management service from the client device, a unique identifier that indicates the client device is within an area where the unique identifier is wirelessly broadcast, wherein the unique identifier is wirelessly broadcast based on the print job being transmitted to the network printer and the unique identifier is unique to at least one of: the print job, and the network printer; and

transmitting, from the management service to the network printer, an authorization to perform the print operation based on the unique identifier being received.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , further comprising:

identifying, by the printer discovery service, an internet protocol (IP) address for each of the plurality of network printers through a domain controller executable on an on-premise server within the intranet; and

accessing, by the printer discovery service, printer configuration data from each of the plurality of network printers using the IP address.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , further comprising:

receiving a specification of the network printer from the listing of the plurality of network printers.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the client device is not bound to an internet protocol (IP) address associated with the intranet.

The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the printer discovery service is further configured to send the printer configuration data obtained from each of the plurality of network printers from the on-premise server to the at least one computing device for access by the management service.

The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the unique identifier is wirelessly broadcast from the at least one of the plurality of network printers using at least one of: radio-frequency identification (RFID), Bluetooth®, ZigBee®, near-field communication (NFC), infrared (IR), or wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi).

The system of claim 1 , wherein the agent application is directed to configure the client device to access at least one of the plurality of network printers by configuring an operating system of the client device to have access to the at least one of the plurality of network printers using printer configuration data through a command line.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the agent application is directed to configure the client device to access at least one of the plurality of network printers by causing the agent application to install a driver for the at least one of the plurality of network printers as a background process.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein a specification of the network printer is identified from a listing of the plurality of network printers.
