Abstract

An earpiece includes an earpiece housing, a processor disposed within the earpiece housing, and a gesture based interface operatively connected to the processor and configured to detect changes in an energy field associated with user gestures. The processor is configured to interpret the changes in the energy field to determine the user gestures.

Claims (38)

1. An earpiece comprising:

an earpiece housing;

a processor disposed within the earpiece housing; and

a gesture based interface operatively connected to the processor, wherein the gesture based interface comprises at least one emitter and a detector;

wherein each emitter is configured to emit pulses at a sampling rate;

wherein the detector is configured to sense the pulses reflected off of user gestures;

wherein the processor is configured to execute a proximity detection algorithm in response to a reading of the pulses from the detector to determine a proximity of the user gestures relative to the earpiece; and

wherein the processor is further configured to instruct the at least one emitter to increase the sampling rate if the proximity is above a first threshold.

2. The earpiece of claim 1 wherein the at least one emitter comprises at least one infrared (IR) light emitting diode (LED).

3. The earpiece of claim 1 wherein the at least one emitter comprises at least two infrared (IR) light emitting diodes (LEDs).

4. The earpiece of claim 3 wherein the detector comprises an IR receiver.

5. The earpiece of claim 1 wherein the at least one emitter comprises at least one ultra sound emitter.

6. The earpiece of claim 1 wherein the at least one emitter comprises a plurality of ultra sound emitters.

7. The earpiece of claim 6 wherein the detector further comprises an ultra sound receiver.

8. The earpiece of claim 1 wherein the user gestures include a swipe gesture.

9. The earpiece of claim 8 wherein the processor is configured to determine a directionality of the swipe gesture from a peak proximity of the user gestures.

10. The earpiece of claim 1 wherein the user gestures include a tap gesture.

11. The earpiece of claim 9 further comprising a speaker operatively connected to the processor, wherein the processor is further configured to provide audio feedback to a user through the speaker if a confidence level associated with the peak proximity of the swipe gesture is below a second threshold.

12. The earpiece of claim 1 wherein the processor is further configured to reverse modes when the pulses sensed by the detector exceed a threshold.

13. The earpiece of claim 1 wherein the processor is configured to alter a rate of energy emission upon detection of an object.

14. The earpiece of claim 1 wherein the earpiece housing is water impervious to allow a user to swim while wearing the earpiece.

15. The earpiece of claim 1 wherein the at least one emitter comprises a plurality of radar emitters.

16. The earpiece of claim 15 wherein the detector further comprises at least one radar receiver.

17. An earpiece comprising:

an earpiece housing, wherein the earpiece housing is water impervious to allow a user to swim while wearing the earpiece;

a processor disposed within the earpiece housing;

at least one speaker and at least one microphone operatively connected to the earpiece housing and the processor; and

an infrared (IR) light emitting diode (LED) interface operatively connected to the earpiece housing and the processor;

wherein the IR LED interface comprises at least one IR LED and at least one IR receiver;

wherein each IR LED is configured to emit infrared pulses at a sampling rate;

wherein each IR receiver is configured to sense the infrared pulses reflected off of user gestures;

wherein the processor is configured to execute a proximity detection algorithm in response to a reading of the infrared pulses from the IR receiver to determine a proximity of the user gestures relative to the earpiece; and

wherein the processor is further configured to instruct the at least one IR LED to increase the sampling rate if the proximity is above a threshold; and

wherein the processor is further configured to determine a directionality of the user gestures from a peak proximity of the user gestures.

18. The earpiece of claim 17 wherein the processor is configured to reverse modes when the infrared pulses sensed by the at least one IR receiver is above a threshold.

19. The earpiece of claim 1 further comprising an inertial sensor operatively connected to the earpiece housing and the processor, wherein inertial sensor data sensed by the inertial sensor is used in determining the proximity of the user gestures relative to the earpiece by the processor.

20. The earpiece of claim 17 further comprising an inertial sensor operatively connected to the earpiece housing and the processor, wherein inertial sensor data sensed by the inertial sensor is used in determining the proximity of the user gestures relative to the earpiece by the processor.

21. The earpiece of claim 11 wherein the audio feedback further comprises an additional request associated with the swipe gesture.
