Abstract

A method of payment terminal operation, including: receiving a payment collection request for a payment from an application, generating a payment initiation request for the payment, sending the payment initiation request to a secure processing system, switching the secure processing system from operation in an unsecured mode to operation in a secured mode in response to receipt of the payment initiation request, facilitating payment information entry, and receiving a payment response notification, generated based on the payment information, at the main processor.

Claims (40)

1. A method for payment terminal operation, comprising:

at a main processing system included in a payment terminal that includes a main display and a secure display:

executing an application, and

controlling the main display in accordance with the application;

at a secure processing system included in the payment terminal:

operating in a secure mode in response to receipt of a payment initiation request from the main processing system, comprising:

receiving payment card information; and

in response to determination that a PIN entry is required based on the payment card information, transmitting a PIN pad display request to the main processing system, wherein the main processing system is connected to the secure display, and wherein the PIN pad display request specifies a first display element;

at the main processing system, controlling the secure display to display the first display element;

responsive to transmission of the PIN pad display request, at the secure processing system, and in the secure mode:

receiving input coordinates from a secure input system connected to the secure processing system, wherein the secure input system is associated with the secure display;

identifying inputs by processing the received input coordinates based on the first display element;

generating a payment transaction request based on the identified inputs;

transmitting the payment transaction request to the main processing system for transmission to an acquirer; and

operating in an unsecured mode after payment transaction request transmission.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein operating in an unsecured mode comprises, at the secure processing system:

receiving inputs received from the secure input system; and

forwarding the inputs to the main processing system;

wherein the inputs received from the secure input system are not forwarded to the main processing system during operation in the secure mode.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein operation in the secure mode further comprises, at the secure processing system: interpreting the inputs received from the secure input system based on a coordinate map associated with the displayed PIN pad.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein operation in the unsecured mode comprises, at the secure processing system:

receiving inputs received from the secure input system; and

forwarding the inputs received from the secure input system to the main processing system, wherein the main processing system interprets the inputs based on display elements concurrently presented by the main processing system on the secure display;

wherein the inputs received from the secure input system are not forwarded to the main processing system during operation in the secure mode.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein a transaction identifier is associated with the payment transaction request by the main processing system prior to transmission to the acquiror.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the payment initiation request is generated by the main processing system in response to receipt of a payment collection request from the application executing on the main processing system.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the payment transaction request is transmitted to the acquiror via a remote system intermediary.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the remote system intermediary receives a payment approval status from the acquiror, stores the payment approval status in association with a transaction identifier; and forwards the payment approval status to the main processing system.

9. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the first display element represents a PIN pad, and

wherein identifying inputs by processing the received input coordinates based on the first display element comprises: interpreting the input coordinates based on a coordinate map associated with the first display element.

10. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the secure input system is a touch input system,

wherein the input coordinates are touch coordinates, and

wherein identifying inputs by processing the received input coordinates based on the first display element comprises:

within a period of time after transmission of the PIN pad display request, mapping touch coordinates received from the secure input system to a set of alphanumeric values based on a predetermined mapping of touch coordinates received by the secure input system to display coordinates of the first display element.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the secure processing system stores a coordinate map that includes the predetermined mapping of touch coordinates received by the secure input system to display coordinates of the first display element.

12. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the main processing system receives input coordinates from a main input system connected to the main processing system, wherein the main input system is associated with the main display, and wherein the main display is different from the secure display.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the main processing system processes the input coordinates received from the main input system in accordance with the application.
