Abstract

An electrophysiology catheter constructed with assembly and wiring of ring electrodes using spacer rings of electrically-nonconductive material, whose length is predetermined/premeasured, includes a distal section with at least one spine having two electrodes, and a spacer member therebetween, wherein the spacer member configured to provide a separation gap between the two electrodes. The separation gap may span in an axial direction and/or in a circumferential direction. The spacer member may be configured generally as a ring with a center axial opening configured to receive the spine therethrough. The spacer member may include an axial extension providing a first separation gap between a first pair of electrodes in a circumferential direction, and a circumferential providing a second separation gap between a second pair of electrodes in an axial direction.

Claims (36)

1. An electrophysiology catheter comprising:

an elongated body;

a distal section distal of the elongated body, the distal section including at least one spine having at least two electrodes, and a generally cylindrical spacer member mounted in a generally surrounding relationship on the at least one spine and having at least a portion spanning between the at least two electrodes, the at least two electrodes spanning less than 360 degrees circumferentially around the at least one spine, wherein the spacer member is made of a nonconductive material and the portion of the spacer member spanning between the at least two electrodes is configured to provide a separation gap of smaller than 1.0 mm between the at least two electrodes.

2. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the separation gap spans in an axial direction.

3. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the separation gap spans in a circumferential direction.

4. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the separation gap is about 50 microns to about 200 microns.

5. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the spacer member includes an axial extension configured to provide a first separation gap between a first pair of the at least two electrodes in a circumferential direction and a circumferential extension configured to provide a second separation gap between a second pair of the at least two electrodes in an axial direction.

6. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the spacer member includes an axial extension spanning between a first pair of the at least two electrodes in a circumferential direction, and a circumferential extension spanning between a second pair of the at least two electrodes.

7. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the spacer member has a first axial extension spanning between a first pair of the at least two electrodes in a circumferential direction, a second axial extension spanning between a second pair of the at least two electrodes in the circumferential direction, and at least one circumferential extension extending between the first and second axial extensions and spanning between an electrode of the first pair and an electrode of the second pair in an axial direction.

8. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein outer surfaces of the at least two electrodes and an outer surface of the spacer member together form a 360 degree circumferential surface that surrounds an outer surface of the spine.

9. A method of assembling the catheter of claim 1 , comprising:

connecting a distal end of a respective lead wire to each of the at least two electrodes;

sliding a first one of the at least two electrodes on the spine;

sliding the spacer member on the spine;

sliding a second one of the at least two electrodes on the spine; and

abutting the first one of the at least two electrodes and the second one of the at least two electrodes against the spacer member.

10. An electrophysiology catheter comprising:

an elongated body;

a distal electrode assembly distal of the elongated body and having a plurality of spines, at least one of the spines having a plurality of electrodes and a spacer member therebetween, the spacer member being mounted generally in surrounding relation on the at least one of the spines and being made of a nonconductive material, the spacer member being configured with axially recessed voids occupied by the electrodes in providing an axial separation gap between a first pair of adjacent electrodes and a circumferential separation gap between a second pair of adjacent electrodes.

11. The catheter of claim 10 , wherein the spacer member has a first circumferential extension and a first axial extension.

12. The catheter of claim 11 , wherein the first circumferential extension extends between the first axial extension and a second axial extension.

13. The catheter of claim 12 , wherein the first circumferential extension and the first and second axial extensions define the axially recessed voids in the spacer member.

14. A method of assembling the catheter of claim 10 , comprising:

inserting a distal end of the at least one spine through an axial through-hole of the spacer member;

sliding the spacer member along the at least one spine to a predetermined position on the at least one spine; and

positioning each electrode in a respective one of the axially recessed voids.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein positioning each electrode includes sliding each electrode into a respective one of the recessed voids.

16. An electrophysiology catheter comprising:

an elongated body;

a distal section distal of the elongated body, the distal section including at least one spine having at least two electrodes, and a generally cylindrical spacer member mounted in a generally surrounding relationship on the at least one spine and having at least a portion spanning a predetermined distance between the at least two electrodes, wherein the spacer member is made of a nonconductive material and the spacer member having at least two axially recessed voids occupied by the at least two electrodes; and

a respective lead wire connected to each electrode.

17. A method of assembling the catheter of claim 16 , comprising:

connecting a distal end of a respective lead wire to each one of the at least two electrodes;

sliding the spacer member onto the spine; and

positioning each of the at least two electrodes in a respective one of the axially recessed voids of the spacer member.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the spacer member has at least two axial extensions and a circumferential extension, and the two axially recessed voids are defined by the at least two axial extensions and the circumferential extension.
