Abstract

Apparatus and methods for endodontic treatment of teeth provide effective cleaning of organic material (such as pulp and diseased tissue) from the root canal system. In an embodiment, a compressor system generates high pressure liquid (e.g., water) that flows through an orifice to produce a high-velocity collimated jet of liquid. The high-velocity jet is directed toward a surface of a tooth, for example, an exposed dentinal surface, and impingement of the jet onto the surface generates an acoustic wave that propagates throughout the tooth. The acoustic wave effectively detaches organic material from dentinal surfaces and tubules. The detached organic material is flushed from the root canal system by the liquid jet and/or by additional irrigation.

Claims (28)

1. A method for treating an infected or decaying condition in a tooth, the method comprising,

positioning a mounting surface of an enclosure against a tooth surface at or near a treatment region of the tooth to enclose the treatment region and to expose an access opening of the enclosure to the treatment region; and

directing liquid through a flow pathway within the enclosure to produce a swirling flow profile within at least the liquid passing through the access opening toward the treatment region, wherein the liquid directed through the flow path within the enclosure is substantially gas-free.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the substantially gas-free liquid includes less than 1% dissolved gases by volume.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising directing the liquid through an orifice to form a liquid jet.

4. The method of claim 1 , additionally comprising generating pressure waves of sufficient energy to create surface-effect cavitation at an infected or decaying surface of the tooth.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the generated pressure waves comprise frequencies within a widespread range of acoustic noise.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the frequencies comprise frequencies in a range from about 1 Hz to about 10 MHz.

7. A method for treating an infected or decaying condition in a tooth, the method comprising,

positioning a mounting surface of an enclosure against a tooth surface at or near a treatment region of the tooth to enclose the treatment region and to expose an access opening of the enclosure to the treatment region;

directing liquid through a flow pathway within the enclosure to produce a swirling flow profile within at least the liquid passing through the access opening toward the treatment region; and

evacuating liquid and organic material from the treatment region by way of an outflow opening.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein directing the liquid comprises directing a liquid jet through the flow pathway.

9. The method of claim 8 , additionally comprising directing a plurality of liquid jets to the treatment region.

10. The method of claim 7 , additionally comprising supplying liquid at an oblique angle to a long axis of a root canal of the tooth.

11. The method of claim 7 , additionally comprising generating the swirling flow profile by directing liquid against one or more angled portions of an interior wall of the enclosure.

12. The method of claim 7 , additionally comprising supplying an abrasive solution to the treatment region.

13. The method of claim 7 , wherein the liquid directed through the flow path within the enclosure is substantially gas-free.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the substantially gas-free liquid includes less than 1% dissolved gases by volume.

15. The method of claim 7 , further comprising directing the liquid through an orifice to form a liquid jet.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein a pressure of the liquid used to produce the liquid jet is in a range from about 2,000 psi to about 11,000 psi.

17. The method of claim 7 , further comprising removing liquid through the outflow opening at substantially the same rate as the liquid is supplied to the flow pathway.

18. The method of claim 7 , wherein directing the liquid through the flow pathway comprises directing the liquid through a guide tube.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein directing the liquid through a guide tube comprises directing the liquid through a bore having a helical surface.

20. The method of claim 7 , additionally comprising generating pressure waves of sufficient energy to create surface-effect cavitation at an infected or decaying surface of the tooth.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the generated pressure waves comprise frequencies within a widespread range of acoustic noise.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the frequencies comprise frequencies in a range from about 1 Hz to about 10 MHz.

23. The method of claim 7 , additionally comprising activating a pump to pressurize the liquid to form a liquid jet.
