Abstract

Certain embodiments described herein are directed to induction devices comprising an oxidation resistant material. In certain examples, the induction device comprises a coil of wire that is produced from the oxidation resistant material. In some examples, the oxidation resistant induction device can be used to sustain an inductively coupled plasma in a torch.

Claims (21)

1. A mass spectrometer comprising:

a torch body configured to sustain an inductively coupled plasma;

an induction device comprising an oxidation resistant material and configured to provide radio frequency energy to the torch body to sustain the plasma in the torch body, wherein the induction device is configured as a helical induction coil comprising a plurality of coil turns coupled to each other, in which the coil turns comprise an effective amount of the oxidation resistant material to permit the inductively coupled plasma to be sustained in the torch body for at least ten hours without substantial oxidation of the helical induction coil; and

a mass analyzer in fluid communication with the torch body and configured to separate species based on mass-to-charge ratios.

2. The mass spectrometer of claim 1 , in which the helical induction coil consists essentially of an aluminum alloy.

3. The mass spectrometer of claim 1 , in which the helical induction coil consists essentially of an oxidation resistant paramagnetic material.

4. The mass spectrometer of claim 1 , in which the helical induction coil consists of an aluminum alloy.

5. The mass spectrometer of claim 1 , further comprising a radio frequency generator electrically coupled to the induction device.

6. The mass spectrometer of claim 1 , further comprising an additional mass spectrometer coupled to the mass spectrometer.

7. The mass spectrometer of claim 1 , further comprising a gas chromatography system coupled to the mass spectrometer.

8. The mass spectrometer of claim 1 , in which the helical induction coil comprises at least 97% by weight of the oxidation resistant material.

9. The mass spectrometer of claim 1 , in which the helical induction coil comprises a non-coated material.

10. The mass spectrometer of claim 1 , in which the oxidation resistant material is effective to sustain the plasma in the torch for at least one hundred hours without substantial oxidation of the helical induction coil.

11. The mass spectrometer of claim 10 , in which the helical induction coil comprises at least 97% by weight of the oxidation resistant material.

12. The mass spectrometer of claim 1 , in which the helical induction coil comprises one and one half turns to ten turns.

13. The mass spectrometer of claim 1 , in which the helical induction coil comprises two and one half turns.

14. The mass spectrometer of claim 1 , further comprising a detector fluidically coupled to the mass analyzer.

15. The mass spectrometer of claim 14 , in which the detector comprises one or more of an electron multiplier, a Faraday cup, a coated photographic plate, or a scintillation detector.

16. The mass spectrometer of claim 1 , in which the mass analyzer is a scanning mass analyzer, a magnetic sector analyzer, a quadrupole mass analyzer, an ion trap analyzer or a time-of-flight mass analyzer.

17. The mass spectrometer of claim 16 , further comprising a detector fluidically coupled to the mass analyzer.

18. The mass spectrometer of claim 17 , in which the detector comprises one or more of an electron multiplier, a Faraday cup, a coated photographic plate, or a scintillation detector.
