Abstract

In an embodiment, triplets of network-enabled FCIs operate to monitor the three phases of a power distribution system. In being network-enabled, the FCIs also operate as nodes of an RF mesh network. In an embodiment, upon the detection of a power failure, the triplet of network FCIs is serially operated so as to extend their networking capabilities by approximately three times.

Claims (35)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

detecting a power outage associated with one or more power lines that power a plurality of nodes that are part of a wireless network;

in response to the power outage, transitioning network functionality from one or more other nodes included in the plurality of nodes to a first node; and

placing the one or more other nodes into reduced power states.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more nodes is placed into the reduced power state for a respective predetermined amount of time.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein each node in the plurality of nodes is incorporated as part of a fault circuit indicator.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting the first node based on a respective battery status for each node included in the plurality of nodes.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, for each node included in the plurality of nodes, transmitting a status message based on the respective battery status.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising, for each node included in the plurality of nodes, determining the respective predetermined time based on the respective battery status.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising obtaining a status of the first node; and determining whether the first node should continue to maintain the network functionality based on the status.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising waking up a second node included in the one or more other nodes.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising transitioning the network functionality from the first node to the second node upon determining that the first node should not continue to maintain the network functionality.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising powering down the first node after network functionality has been transitioned to the second node.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising placing the second node into another reduced power state upon determining that the first node should continue to maintain the network functionality.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, in response to the power outage, selecting the first node included in the plurality of nodes as a lead node.

13. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

in response to a power outage associated with a plurality of power lines that power a plurality of nodes that are part of a wireless mesh network, selecting a first node included in the plurality of nodes to manage the wireless mesh network;

transitioning network functionality from all other nodes included in the plurality of nodes to the first node; and

placing the all other nodes into reduced power states.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein each node included in the plurality of nodes is associated with a fault circuit indicator.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising selecting the first node based on a respective battery status for each node included in the plurality of nodes.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising obtaining a status of the first node; and determining whether the first node should continue to maintain the network functionality based on the status.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising waking up a second node included in the one or more other nodes.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising transitioning the network functionality from the first node to the second node upon determining that the first node should not continue to maintain the network functionality.

19. The method of claim 16 , further comprising powering down the first node after network functionality has been transitioned to the second node.

20. A wireless network device configured to perform one or more mesh network operations, the wireless network device comprising:

a transceiver circuit configured to generate and receive radio signals; and

a processor that is coupled to the transceiver circuit and, upon executing a set of instructions, is configured to:

monitor a plurality of power lines that power at least a portion of a wireless mesh network within which the wireless network device acts as a node;

detect a power outage associated with the plurality of power lines; and

if selected as a lead node based on a status message, then take over one or more mesh network operations being performed by a first node included in the wireless mesh network, or

if not selected as the lead node based on the status message, then transition the one or more mesh network operations to another node included in the wireless mesh network, and enter into a reduced power state.

21. The wireless network device of claim 20 , wherein the processor is further configured to perform the one or more mesh network operations taken over from the first node until the wireless network device loses power.

22. The wireless network device of claim 21 , wherein, prior to losing power, the processor is further configured to transition the one or more mesh network operations taken over from the first node to some other node, including the first node, included in the wireless mesh network.

23. The wireless network device of claim 20 , wherein the processor is further configured to, in response to detecting the power outage associated with the plurality of power lines, transmit the status message based on a battery check.
