Abstract

A flame sensor apparatus includes a sensor assembly. The sensor assembly includes a photodiode for sensing characteristics of a flame. The photodiode outputs an electrical photocurrent. The sensor assembly includes an electrical assembly that is electrically remote from the sensor assembly. The sensor assembly includes an electric cable assembly extending from the sensor assembly to the electrical assembly. The electric cable assembly includes an electrical cable to electrically convey the photocurrent to the electrical assembly. At least the sensor assembly is configured and constructed to experience and continue to operate at a temperature at or greater than 200° C.

Claims (25)

1. A flame sensor apparatus for flame sensing within a turbine, the flame sensor apparatus including:

a sensor assembly entirely located within the turbine at a first location, which is within the turbine, having a first, relatively elevated temperature, the sensor assembly including a photodiode, at the first location, for sensing characteristics of a flame within a combustion chamber of the turbine, the photodiode outputting an electrical photocurrent that has an electrical current value that is indicative of the characteristics of the flame and the sensor assembly including an electrical wire, at the first location, electrically connected to the photodiode to receive the electrical photocurrent output from the photodiode and electrically convey the electrical photocurrent, the sensor assembly including a lens and a wave spring positioned between the photodiode and the lens, the wave spring configured to allow the lens to travel in an axial direction within the sensor assembly in response to vibrational forces present at the first location;

an electrical assembly that is electrically remote from the sensor assembly at a second location having a second temperature relatively lower than the first temperature at the first location; and

an electric cable assembly extending from the sensor assembly, at the first location, to the electrical assembly, at the second location, and transitioning from the first location having the relatively elevated temperature to the second location having the relatively lower temperature, the electric cable assembly including an electrical cable electrically connected to the electrical wire of the sensor assembly and being configured to electrically convey the photocurrent, that is indicative of the characteristics of the flame, from the photodiode, and electrically conveyed by the electrical wire of the sensor assembly, to the electrical assembly.

2. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the sensor assembly comprises a circuit board, and the circuit board is devoid of organic material.

3. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the circuit board is devoid of fiberglass-reinforced epoxy laminate (FR4) material.

4. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the circuit board is devoid of Cyanate Ester.

5. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the circuit board is devoid of ceramic laminate.

6. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the sensor assembly comprises a circuit board, and the circuit board contains a high temperature ceramic insulating material.

7. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the circuit board comprises Al 2 O 3 (Aluminum oxide).

8. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the circuit board comprises AlN (Aluminum nitride).

9. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the circuit board comprises BN (Boron nitride).

10. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the sensor assembly comprises plural parts, and at least some of the plural parts of the sensor assembly are welded.

11. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the plural parts of the sensor assembly comprises a wire housing and a sensor body, and the wire housing and the sensor body are welded.

12. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the plural parts of the sensor assembly comprises a wire housing and a wire seal adapter, and the wire housing and the wire seal adapter are welded.

13. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the plural parts of the sensor assembly comprises a wire seal adapter and a cable fitting, and the wire seal adapter and the cable fitting are welded.

14. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the sensor assembly comprises plural parts, and at least one of the plural parts of the sensor assembly is welded to the electric cable assembly.

15. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the sensor assembly comprises plural parts, and at least some of the plural parts of the sensor assembly are brazed.

16. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the electrical wire is a center wire, the plural parts of the sensor assembly comprise the center wire and a circuit board, and the center wire and the circuit board are brazed.

17. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the sensor assembly comprises plural parts, and at least some of the plural parts of the sensor assembly define a sealed volume.

18. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the sealed volume contains an inert gas.

19. The flame sensor apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the sensor assembly comprises plural parts and the electric cable assembly, and at least some of the plural parts of the sensor assembly and at least some of the plural parts of the electric cable assembly define a sealed volume.
