Abstract

A gluing device for automatically gluing and folding a gluable item. The gluing device includes a support structure upon which a gluing apparatus and a support plate assembly are mounted. The support plate is configured for supporting and aligning a gluable item for gluing and assembly by the gluing apparatus. The gluing apparatus includes a first clamp configured for selectively and securely holding a first portion of the gluable item on the support plate, a glue dispensing nozzle fluidly coupled to a glue supply, and a folding apparatus configured for folding the first portion of the gluable item onto a second portion of the gluable item after glue has been applied. A method for automatically gluing and folding a gluable item is also disclosed.

Claims (34)

1. A method for constructing a box, the method comprising:

providing a box blank comprising a plurality of panels, a glue tab, and a plurality of creases, the plurality of panels including a first panel disposed at a first end of the box blank, a second panel adjacent to the first panel, a third panel adjacent to the second panel, and a fourth panel adjacent to the third panel, the fourth panel being disposed adjacent to a second end of the box blank opposite to the first panel, the glue tab being disposed adjacent to the fourth panel, and the plurality of creases comprising a crease between each set of adjacent panels and a crease between the fourth panel and the glue tab;

folding the box blank at the crease between the second panel and the third panel so that the first panel lies generally parallel to the fourth panel and such that an edge of the first panel is positioned adjacent to the crease between the fourth panel and the glue tab; and

securing the glue tab to the first panel to form a glued box blank, wherein securing the glue tab to the first panel includes inserting the box blank into a first side of a gluing device and using the gluing device to perform the following steps:

securely holding a portion of the glue tab in place;

securely holding the first panel in place against the fourth panel in a stationary position such that the first panel remains generally parallel to the fourth panel and the edge of the first panel remains positioned adjacent to the crease between the fourth panel and the glue tab;

applying glue to at least one of the glue tab and the first panel; and

folding the glue tab relative to the fourth panel and onto the first panel with the glue therebetween while still holding the first panel in the stationary position.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising withdrawing the glued box blank from the first side of the gluing device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein folding the glue tab onto the first panel comprises at least two stages:

in a first stage, folding the folding the glue tab while securely holding the portion of the glue tab in place; and

in a second stage, releasing the hold on the portion of the glue tab and folding the glue tab onto the first panel.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising compressing the glue tab against the first panel, with the glue therebetween.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the glue tab is securely held in place by a first, motorized clamp.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first, motorized clamp holds one or more layers of the box blank.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first, motorized clamp comes down substantially on the crease disposed between the fourth panel and the glue tab.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first, motorized clamp forms the crease between the fourth panel and the glue tab.

9. The method of claim 5 , further comprising aligning a second portion of the packaging material against the first, motorized clamp.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first panel is securely held in place against the fourth panel by a second, motorized clamp.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising detecting with a sensor on the gluing device the location of the glue tab to facilitate application of glue to only a desired portion of the box blank.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein securing the glue tab to the first panel comprises attaching the glue tab onto an outer surface of the first panel.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the glue tab is folded onto the first panel with a motorized folding bar.

14. A method for constructing a box, the method comprising:

providing a box blank comprising a plurality of panels, a glue tab, and a plurality of creases, the plurality of panels including a first panel disposed at a first end of the box blank, a second panel adjacent to the first panel, a third panel adjacent to the second panel, and a fourth panel adjacent to the third panel, the fourth panel being disposed adjacent to a second end of the box blank opposite to the first panel, the glue tab being disposed adjacent to the fourth panel, and the plurality of creases comprising a crease between each set of adjacent panels and a crease between the fourth panel and the glue tab;

folding the box blank at the crease between the second panel and the third panel so that the first panel lies generally parallel to the fourth panel and such that an edge of the first panel is positioned adjacent to the fold between the fourth panel and the glue tab;

securely holding the first panel in place in a stationary position such that the first panel remains generally parallel to the fourth panel and the edge of the first panel remains positioned adjacent to the fold between the fourth panel and the glue tab;

applying glue to the first panel while holding the first panel in the stationary position; and

folding the glue tab relative to the fourth panel and onto the first panel with the glue therebetween while still holding the first panel in the stationary position.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein folding the glue tab onto the first panel comprises at least two stages:

in a first stage, folding the folding the glue tab while securely holding the portion of the glue tab in place; and

in a second stage, releasing the hold on the portion of the glue tab and folding the glue tab onto the first panel.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising compressing the glue tab against the first panel, with the glue therebetween.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first panel is securely held in place against the fourth panel.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein securing the glue tab to the first panel comprises attaching the glue tab onto an outer surface of the first panel.
