Abstract

A method for automatically cleaning a vehicle's heat exchanger or air filter is provided. In use, once the system determines that the heat exchanger/air filter should be cleaned, for example based on total operational time or the number of use cycles or air flow, the system temporarily reverses the direction of the corresponding fan assembly, thereby reversing the flow of air through the heat exchanger/air filter and forcing out dust, dirt and other debris.

Claims (13)

1. A self-cleaning fan assembly integrated into a vehicle, the self-cleaning fan assembly comprising:

a user interface integrated into said vehicle;

a fan;

a heat exchanger, wherein said fan is positioned to force air through said heat exchanger in a first direction when said fan rotates in a first rotational direction;

a fan controller coupled to said fan, wherein said fan controller controls a rotational direction of said fan; and

a processor coupled to said fan controller, said processor configured to monitor a total number of use cycles of said fan, said processor configured to automatically transmit a reminder via said user interface to perform a heat exchanger cleaning cycle when said total number of use cycles exceeds a preset value, said processor configured to perform said heat exchanger cleaning cycle when a user inputs a request via said user interface to clean said heat exchanger, said processor configured to perform said heat exchanger cleaning cycle by temporarily altering said rotational direction of said fan from said first rotational direction to a second rotational direction, wherein said fan forces air through said heat exchanger in a second direction when said fan rotates in said second rotational direction, and wherein said second direction is opposite to said first direction.

2. The self-cleaning fan assembly of claim 1 , wherein said processor performs said heat exchanger cleaning cycle after said user inputs said request and when said vehicle is not in motion.

3. The self-cleaning fan assembly of claim 2 , wherein said processor performs said heat exchanger cleaning cycle after said user inputs said request and when said vehicle is in park.

4. The self-cleaning fan assembly of claim 1 , wherein said processor automatically performs said heat exchanger cleaning cycle when said total number of use cycles exceeds a second preset value.

5. The self-cleaning fan assembly of claim 4 , wherein said processor automatically performs said heat exchanger cleaning cycle when said total number of use cycles exceeds said second preset value and said vehicle is not in motion.

6. The self-cleaning fan assembly of claim 5 , wherein said processor automatically performs said heat exchanger cleaning cycle when said total number of use cycles exceeds said second preset value and said vehicle is in park.

7. The self-cleaning fan assembly of claim 1 , wherein said heat exchanger is selected from the group consisting of radiators, condensers, and evaporators.

8. The self-cleaning fan assembly of claim 1 , wherein said processor is integrated into said fan controller.
