Abstract

A method, system, and apparatus for fabricating a high-strength Superconducting cable comprises pre-oxidizing at least one high-strength alloy wire, coating at least one Superconducting wire with a protective layer, and winding the high-strength alloy wire and the Superconducting wire to form a high-strength Superconducting cable.

Claims (29)

1. A high-strength superconducting cable comprising:

at least one high-strength alloy wire covered with at least two protective layers said high-strength alloy wire comprising a plurality of filaments embedded in an Ag matrix, wherein a first protective layer is an Al 2 O 3 passivation oxide layer and a second protective layer is a TiO 2 non-reactive oxide layer; and

at least one superconducting wire coated with a protective layer wrapped together with said at least one high-strength alloy wire to form said high-strength superconducting cable wherein said high-strength superconducting cable is treated with a heat treatment cycle.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said at least one superconducting wire comprises Bi-2212 round wire.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said at least one high-strength alloy wire comprises FeCrAl.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said first protective layer covering said at least one high-strength alloy wire comprises a protective layer formed by pre-oxidizing and heat treating said high-strength alloy wire; and

said second protective layer covering said at least one high-strength alloy wires comprises a 10-19 micrometer oxide coating.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said high-strength superconducting cable further comprises:

a 1+6 cable pack;

a 4+3 cable pack;

a 3+4 cable pack;

a cable-in-conduit cable; and

a Rutherford cable.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said high-strength superconducting cable is wound into a coil.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said heat treatment cycle is preformed in 100% flowing O2 and reaches a temperature of at least 891 degrees Celsius.

8. A system for conducting current comprising:

at least one high-strength alloy wire covered with at least two protective layers said high-strength alloy wire comprising a plurality of filaments embedded in an Ag matrix, wherein a first protective layer is an Al 2 O 3 passivation oxide layer and a second protective layer is a TiO 2 non-reactive oxide layer; and

at least one superconducting wire coated with a protective layer wrapped together with said at least one high-strength alloy wire to form a high-strength superconducting cable wherein said high-strength superconducting cable is treated with a heat treatment cycle.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein said at, least one superconducting wire comprises Bi-2212 round wire.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein said at least one high-strength alloy wire comprises FeCrAl.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein said first protective layer covering said at least one high-strength alloy wire comprises a protective layer formed by pre-oxidizing and heat treating said high-strength alloy wire; and

said second protective layer covering said at least one high-strength alloy wires comprises a 10-19 micrometer oxide coating.

12. The system of claim 8 wherein said high-strength superconducting cable further comprises:

a 1+6 cable pack;

a 4+3 cable pack;

a 3+4 cable pack

a cable-in-conduit cable; and

a Rutherford cable.

13. The system of claim 8 wherein said heat treatment cycle is preformed in 100% flowing O2 that reaches a temperature of at least 891 degrees Celsius.
