Abstract

Systems and methods are provided to optimize bandwidth usage associated with a local network. As part of the bandwidth optimization techniques, a network regulation entity may maintain a plurality of usage statistics for a plurality of electronic devices. These usage statistics may be compared to an access profile to determine whether the local network is being used in a way anomalous with the access profile. If there is an anomalous usage condition present, the network regulation entity may generate a notification to inform a user of an electronic device as to the anomalous condition. Accordingly, when a user of the electronic device interacts with the notification, the electronic device may present an interface that enables the user to remedy the anomalous condition. Thus, because the remedial action is generated at the user's direction, compliance with network neutrality principles may be maintained.

Claims (63)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, from an electronic device, a plurality of data packets addressed to a location external to a local network;

analyzing, by one or more processors, the plurality of data packets to update a usage profile within an electronic record corresponding to the electronic device;

comparing, by the one or more processors, the usage profile to an access profile within the electronic record;

determining, by the one or more processors, that the comparison indicates that the usage profile is anomalous with the access profile wherein the determination includes:

retrieving, by the one or more processors, an expected proportion of data utilized by a plurality of application categories for (i) a purchased access product and (ii) an alternative access product, and

determining, by the one or more processors, that a mathematical distance between the usage profile and the purchased access product is greater than a mathematical distance between the usage profile and the alternative access product;

in response to the determination, generating, by the one or more processors, a notification indicating that the usage profile is anomalous with the access profile,

the notification generated such that in response to a user interaction with the notification, the notification causes the electronic device to launch an interface to modify an access profile parameter within the access profile that controls a network experience associated with the electronic device to be consistent with the alternative access product; and

transmitting, to the electronic device, the notification.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the comparison indicates that the usage profile is anomalous with the access profile further comprises:

determining, by the one or more processors, that the usage profile indicates that a particular application is utilizing a disproportionate amount of at least one bandwidth or data.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein determining that a particular application is utilizing a disproportionate amount of at least one bandwidth or data further comprises:

determining, by the one or more processors, that the usage profile indicates that a particular application is utilizing a disproportionate amount of at least one bandwidth or data as compared to an overall bandwidth usage or data usage, respectively.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein determining that a particular application is utilizing a disproportionate amount of at least one bandwidth or data further comprises:

determining, by the one or more processors, that the usage profile indicates that a particular application is utilizing a disproportionate amount of at least one bandwidth or data as compared to an application that utilizes a next highest amount of bandwidth or data, respectively.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the comparison indicates that the usage profile is anomalous with the access profile further comprises:

determining, by the one or more processors, that the comparison indicates that a likelihood that reward points or incentives may be earned increases by modifying the access profile parameter.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the notification further comprises:

generating, by the one or more processors, the notification such that upon a user interaction with the notification, the notifications causes the electronic device to launch an interface to purchase an alternative access product.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the notification further comprises:

generating, by the one or more processors, the notification such that upon a user interaction with the notification, the notifications causes the electronic device to launch a usage summary interface.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the notification further comprises:

generating, by the one or more processors, the notification as a push message notification.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein generating the notification further comprises:

generating, by the one or more processors, the notification such that the notification causes an application distributed by a network operator to present the notification on a notification region of a display of the electronic device.

10. A system comprising:

one or more processors;

a profile database storing an electronic record corresponding to an electronic device, the electronic record including an access profile and a usage profile; and

one or more non-transitory, computer-readable storage media storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to:

receive, from an electronic device, a plurality of data packets addressed to a location external to a local network;

analyze, by the one or more processors, the plurality of data packets to update the usage profile;

compare, by the one or more processors, the usage profile to the access profile;

determine, by the one or more processors, that the comparison indicates that the usage profile is anomalous with the access profile wherein the determination includes:

retrieving, by the one or more processors, an expected proportion of data utilized by a plurality of application categories for (i) a purchased access product and (ii) an alternative access product, retrieve, and

determining, by the one or more processors, that a mathematical distance between the usage profile and the purchased access product is greater than a mathematical distance between the usage profile and the alternative access product;

in response to the determination, generate, by the one or more processors, a notification indicating that the usage profile is anomalous with the access profile,

the notification generated such that in response to a user interaction with the notification, the notification causes the electronic device to launch an interface to modify an access profile parameter within the access profile that controls a network experience associated with the electronic device to be consistent with the alternative access product; and

transmit, to the electronic device, the notification.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein to determine that the comparison indicates that the usage profile is anomalous with the access profile, the computer-executable instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to:

determine, by the one or more processors, that the usage profile indicates that a particular application is utilizing a disproportionate amount of at least one bandwidth or data.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein to determine that the comparison indicates that the usage profile is anomalous with the access profile, the computer-executable instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to:

determine, by the one or more processors, that the comparison indicates that a likelihood that reward points or incentives may be earned increases by modifying the access profile parameter.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein to generate the notification, the computer-executable instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to:

generate, by the one or more processors, the notification such that upon a user interaction with the notification, the notifications causes the electronic device to launch an interface to purchase an alternative access product.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein to generate the notification, the computer-executable instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to:

generate, by the one or more processors, the notification such that upon a user interaction with the notification, the notifications causes the electronic device to launch a usage summary interface.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein to generate the notification, the computer-executable instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to:

generate, by the one or more processors, the notification as a push message notification.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein to generate the notification, the computer-executable instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to:

generate, by the one or more processors, the notification such that the notification causes an application distributed by a network operator to present the notification on a notification region of a display of the electronic device.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing processor-executable instructions, that when executed cause one or more processors to:

receive, from a plurality of electronic devices, a plurality of data packets addressed to a location external to a local network;

segment, by the one or more processors, the plurality of data packets into sets of data packets based upon the particular electronic device from which each set of data packets originated;

analyze, by one or more processors, each set of data packets to update a usage profile within an electronic record corresponding to the particular electronic device from which the set of data packets originated;

compare, by the one or more processors, each usage profile to an access profile within the corresponding electronic record to determine whether the usage profile is anomalous with the corresponding access profile, wherein comparing includes:

retrieving, by the one or more processors, an expected proportion of data utilized by a plurality of application categories for (i) a respective purchased access product and (ii) an alternative access product, and

determining, by the one or more processors, that a mathematical distance between the respective usage profile and the respective purchased access product is greater than a mathematical distance between the respective usage profile and the alternative access product;

for each electronic record in which the corresponding usage profile is anomalous with the corresponding access profile, generate, by the one or more processors, a notification to be presented by the corresponding electronic device,

the notification generated such that in response a user interaction with the notification, the notification causes the corresponding electronic device to launch an interface to remedy an anomalous condition by controlling a network experience associated with the corresponding electronic device to be consistent with the alternative access product; and

transmit, to the corresponding electronic devices, the generated notifications.

The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein to segment the plurality of data packets into sets of data packets based upon the particular electronic device from which each set of data packets originated, the instructions, when executed, cause the one or more processors to:

analyze, by the one or more processors, a header of each data packet to determine at least one of an origination IP address, a device identity, or user account information.
