Abstract

A user device for storing or displaying content recommendations includes a search session manager receiving metadata associated with content. The metadata includes a received hierarchical identifier including a primary level and a secondary level unique to the primary level. A memory stores selected hierarchical identifiers. A search module compares the received hierarchical identifiers with the selected hierarchical identifiers. A screen display displays content from at least one of the primary level and secondary level based on comparing.

displaying portions of the textual description table at a first screen display associated with the user device without displaying the numerical hierarchical identifiers;

storing, at the user device, selected ones of the levels of the received numerical hierarchical identifiers corresponding to the textual description table;

comparing, at the user device, the received numerical hierarchical identifiers with the selected ones of the levels of the received numerical hierarchical identifiers;

based on the comparing, generating a second screen display on the display associated with the user device, the second screen display including a recommendations list comprising content from at least one of the selected ones of the levels or recording content at the user device corresponding to at least the selected ones of the levels to form content for recording;

changing the textual description table and not the hierarchical identifiers associated therewith to change the league, organization, division conference or tournament of an organization; and

thereafter to form an updated textual description table, communicating the updated description table from the content processing system to the user device.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein receiving metadata comprises receiving a team identifier at the user receiving device, further comprising storing selected team identifiers at the user device and wherein comparing comprises comparing content further based on the team identifier.

3. The method as recited in claim 2 wherein generating the screen display comprises generating a screen display displaying team identifier descriptors in a menu and wherein storing selected team identifiers comprises storing selected team identifiers based on selections of team identifier descriptors from the menu.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the quaternary level is unique to the tertiary level.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein prior to generating the screen display, storing content based on comparing in the user device to form stored content; and wherein generating the screen display comprises generating the screen display comprising content descriptors for the stored content.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising displaying first hierarchical identifier descriptors corresponding to the primary level, selecting a first hierarchical identifier descriptor from a menu to form a first selected hierarchical identifier and wherein storing comprises storing the first selected hierarchical identifier corresponding to the first hierarchical descriptor.

7. The method as recited in claim 6 further comprising displaying second hierarchical identifier descriptors corresponding to the secondary level, selecting a second hierarchical identifier descriptor to form a second selected hierarchical identifier and wherein storing comprises storing a second selected hierarchical identifier corresponding to the second hierarchical descriptor.

8. A user device comprising:

a search session manager receiving, from a content processing system, numerical hierarchical identifiers corresponding to a primary level identifier, a secondary level identifier, a tertiary level identifier associated with content, a quaternary level identifier and a textual description table that corresponds to a description of the numerical identifiers;

said search session manager receiving metadata associated with content, said metadata comprising a plurality of received team numerical hierarchical identifiers, the plurality of received team numerical hierarchical identifiers each comprising a plurality of levels including at least a least a primary level corresponding to a sport and a secondary level corresponding to a league or organization of the sport, a tertiary level corresponding to a division conference or tournament of the organization or league and a quaternary level corresponding to a division or conference of the conference, division or tournament of the tertiary;

a screen display displaying portions of the textual description table corresponding to the received numerical hierarchical identifiers;

a memory storing selected ones of the levels of the received numerical hierarchical identifiers corresponding to the textual description table;

a search module comparing the received numerical hierarchical identifiers with the selected ones of the levels of the received numerical hierarchical identifiers;

said screen display, based on comparing, displaying including a recommendations list comprising content from at least one of the selected ones of the levels or said user device recording content at the user device corresponding to at least the selected ones of the levels to form content for recording, based on the comparing;

said search session manager receiving an updated textual description table having a changed textual description for changing the league, organization, division conference or tournament of an organization without changing a numerical hierarchical identifier.

9. The user device as recited in claim 8 wherein the quaternary level is unique to the tertiary level.

10. A method comprising:

at a content processing system, storing numerical hierarchical identifiers corresponding to a primary level identifier, a secondary level identifier and a tertiary level identifier associated with content;

linking, at the content processing system, the numerical hierarchical identifiers to a textual description table that corresponds to a description of the numerical identifiers;

communicating, from the content processing system, the primary level identifier, the secondary level identifier and the tertiary level identifier to a user device;

communicating the textual description table to the user device;

receiving, at the user device, metadata associated with the content, said metadata comprising a plurality of received numerical hierarchical identifiers, the plurality of received numerical hierarchical identifiers each comprising the primary level corresponding to a movie genre and the secondary level corresponding to a movie sub-genre, a tertiary level corresponding to a movie type and a quaternary level corresponding to a movie group of the tertiary level, said quaternary level identifier corresponding to a quaternary level unique to the tertiary level, said tertiary level unique to a secondary level which is unique to a primary level, each of the hierarchical identifiers formed by a single identifier comprising multiple levels;

displaying portions of the textual description table at the user device;

storing, at the user device, selected ones of the levels of the received numerical hierarchical identifiers corresponding to the textual description table;
