Abstract

Configurations are disclosed for a health system to be used in various healthcare applications, e.g., for patient diagnostics, monitoring, and/or therapy. The health system may comprise a light generation module to transmit light or an image to a user, one or more sensors to detect a physiological parameter of the user's body, including their eyes, and processing circuitry to analyze an input received in response to the presented images to determine one or more health conditions or defects.

Claims (35)

1. A wearable augmented reality device comprising:

an augmented reality head-mounted ophthalmic system comprising an augmented reality display platform configured to pass light from the world into an eye of a wearer wearing the head-mounted ophthalmic system, the eye having a retina;

at least one light source configured to project light from the light source into the eye to form an image in the eye, the at least one light source configured to sweep the light from the light source across the retina of the eye to produce a reflex of the retina; and

a sensor configured to measure a response of the retina to the swept light,

wherein the head-mounted ophthalmic system is configured to perform retinoscopy to measure refractive error of the eye based upon the measured response of the retina to the swept light,

wherein the display platform comprises a waveguide stack comprising a plurality of waveguides,

wherein the plurality of waveguides are configured to output image light with different amounts of wavefront divergence corresponding to a plurality of depth planes, wherein one or more waveguides of the plurality of waveguides are configured to output the image light with a different amount of wavefront divergence than one or more other waveguides of the plurality of waveguides.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the head-mounted ophthalmic system is configured to dynamically modify the image to conduct a dynamic retinoscopy.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the display platform comprises the at least one light source, wherein the at least one light source comprises a fiber scanning display.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the at least one light source comprises the fiber scanning display and a light generating source.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the display platform comprises an adaptable optics element configured to project the image to a targeted portion of the wearer's eye.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the adaptable optics element comprises a variable focus element.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the variable focus element comprises a membrane mirror.

8. The device of claim 7 , further comprising:

one or more electrodes coupled to the membrane mirror; and

a control system configured to selectively control the one or more electrodes to modify a shape of the membrane mirror based on a corneal shape of the eye.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the ophthalmic system is configured to apply a variable optical power selected to reduce the measured refractive error.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the ophthalmic system is configured to determine whether the measured refractive error has improved in response to a change in the variable optical power.

11. A method for performing a retinoscopy, the method comprising:

providing an augmented reality head-mounted ophthalmic system on a wearer of the ophthalmic system, the ophthalmic system comprising:

an augmented reality display platform configured to pass light from an ambient environment into an eye of the wearer, the eye having a retina;

a light source configured to project light from the light source into the eye; and

a sensor configured to measure a response of the retina to the light from the light source;

sweeping light projected by the light source across the retina of the eye; and

determining a refractive error of the eye by measuring a response of the retina to the swept light with the sensor,

wherein the display platform comprises a waveguide stack comprising a plurality of waveguides,

wherein the plurality of waveguides are configured to output image light with different amounts of wavefront divergence corresponding to a plurality of depth planes, wherein one or more waveguides of the plurality of waveguides are configured to output the image light with a different amount of wavefront divergence than one or more other waveguides of the plurality of waveguides, wherein the image light provides images to the eye of the wearer.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein sweeping the light projected by the light source and determining the refractive error comprises conducting a dynamic retinoscopy by displaying the images provided by the augmented reality display on different ones of a plurality of depth planes.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the display platform comprises a fiber scanning display comprising the light source.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein measuring the response of the retina comprises receiving light reflected from the eye through one or more fibers of the fiber scanning display.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the display platform comprises an adaptable optics element, further comprising utilizing the adaptable optics element to direct the light from the light source to selected portions of the eye.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the adaptable optics element comprises a variable focus element, wherein the variable focus element comprises a membrane minor.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising modifying a shape of the membrane mirror based on a corneal shape of the eye.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the display platform comprises an adaptable optics element, further comprising modifying a variable optical power of the adaptable optics element to reduce the measured refractive error.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising determining whether the measured refractive error has improved in response to a change in the variable optical power.
