Abstract

A surgical instrument includes a shaft, an end effector extending distally from the shaft, and a housing extending proximally from the shaft. The housing includes a motor configured to generate at least one motion to effectuate the end effector, and a power source configured to supply power to the surgical instrument, wherein the power source includes a casing, a data storage unit, and a deactivation mechanism configured to interrupt access to data stored in the data storage unit. In addition, the power source includes a battery pack and a deactivation mechanism configured to deactivate the battery pack if the casing is breached.

Claims (42)

1 . A surgical instrument, comprising:

a shaft;

an end effector extending distally from said shaft; and

a housing extending proximally from said shaft, said housing comprising:

a motor configured to generate at least one motion to effectuate said end effector; and

a power source configured to supply power to said surgical instrument, wherein said power source comprises:

a casing;

a data storage unit; and

a deactivation mechanism configured to interrupt access to data stored in said data storage unit.

2 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said deactivation mechanism is activated by disassembly of said power source.

3 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said deactivation mechanism is triggerable by breach of said casing.

4 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said power source comprises a battery pack.

5 . The surgical instrument of claim 4 , wherein said battery pack is rechargeable.

6 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said power source is detachably coupled to said housing.

7 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said power source comprises a data access portal.

8 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said data access portal is positioned within said casing.

9 . A power source for use with a surgical instrument, said power source comprising:

a casing;

at least one battery positioned at least partially within said casing, said at least one battery configured to supply power to the surgical instrument;

a data storage unit; and

a controller in communication with said data storage unit, wherein said controller is configured to prevent access to data stored in said data storage unit if said casing is breached.

10 . The power source of claim 9 further comprising a breach sensing mechanism, wherein said controller is configured to prevent access to said data if said breach sensing mechanism is triggered.

11 . The power source of claim 10 , wherein said breach sensing mechanism comprises a breakable circuit, wherein said breach sensing mechanism is triggered by breaking said breakable circuit.

12 . The power source of claim 11 , wherein said breakable circuit is configured to be broken when said casing is breached.

13 . The power source of claim 9 , wherein said controller is configured to prevent access to said data by deleting said data.

14 . The power source of claim 9 , further comprising a data access portal for accessing said data.

15 . The power source of claim 14 , wherein said data access portal is positioned within said casing.

16 . The power source of claim 9 , wherein said at least one battery is rechargeable.

17 . The power source of claim 9 , wherein said power source is detachably coupled to the surgical instrument.

18 . A surgical instrument, comprising:

a shaft;

an end effector extending distally from said shaft; and

a housing extending proximally from said shaft, said housing comprising:

a motor configured to generate at least one motion to effectuate said end effector; and

a power source configured to supply power to said motor, wherein said power source comprises:

a casing;

a battery pack; and

a deactivation mechanism configured to deactivate said battery pack if said casing is breached.

19 . The surgical instrument of claim 18 , wherein said internal deactivation mechanism comprises a circuit breakable by breaching said casing.

20 . The surgical instrument of claim 19 , wherein said casing comprises:

a first shell; and

a second shell separably coupled to said first shell, wherein said circuit is breakable by separating said first shell from said second shell.
