Abstract

A side wall assembly for a modular shipping container is provided. The modular shipping container includes a base and a side wall. The side wall assembly includes a tube hinge and a first hinge pin assembly having a first hinge pin extending therefrom. The first hinge pin is configured to be received within a first end of the tube hinge. The side wall assembly further includes a second hinge pin assembly having a second hinge pin extending therefrom. The second hinge pin is configured to be received within a second end of the tube hinge opposite the first end. The tube hinge, the first hinge pin assembly, and the second hinge pin assembly are configured to enable the side wall to pivotally rotate with respect to the base.

Claims (37)

1. A side wall assembly for a modular shipping container, the modular shipping container including a base, the side wall assembly comprising:

a tube hinge;

a first hinge pin assembly including a first hinge pin extending therefrom, the first hinge pin configured to be received within a first end of the tube hinge; and

a second hinge pin assembly including a second hinge pin extending therefrom, the second hinge pin configured to be received within a second end of the tube hinge opposite the first end;

wherein the tube hinge, the first hinge pin, and the second hinge pin are disposed above the base,

wherein the tube hinge, the first hinge pin assembly, and the second hinge pin assembly are configured to enable the side wall to pivotally rotate with respect to the base; and

wherein each of the first hinge pin assembly and the second hinge pin assembly defines an attachment portion configured to engage the base and a flange portion extending substantially perpendicularly from the attachment portion in a direction away from the base.

2. The side wall assembly of claim 1 , wherein tube hinge is a generally hollow tube that defines a generally rectangular shape.

3. The side wall assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first hinge pin assembly is attached to one side of the base, and the second hinge pin assembly is removably coupled to an opposing side of the base.

4. The side wall assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first hinge pin assembly and the second hinge pin assembly define a generally L-shaped profile.

5. The side wall assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first hinge pin assembly is attached to one corner of the base, and the second hinge pin assembly is configured to be removably coupled to a longitudinally opposing corner of the base.

6. The side wall assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first hinge pin of the first hinge pin assembly and the second hinge pin of the second hinge pin assembly are arranged at a junction between an attachment portion and the flange portion thereof.

7. The side wall assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a shim tube coupled to the tube hinge.

8. The side wall assembly of claim 7 , wherein each of the shim tube and the tube hinge is a generally hollow tube that defines a generally rectangular shape.

9. The side wall assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first hinge pin assembly is welded to the base.

10. The side wall assembly of claim 1 , wherein the base includes a plurality of hinge apertures.

11. The side wall assembly of claim 10 , wherein the second hinge pin assembly is coupled to the base via a plurality of fastening elements extending through a corresponding plurality of apertures arranged within the second hinge pin assembly, and the plurality of fastening elements interacting with the plurality of hinge apertures of the base.

12. A side wall assembly for a modular shipping container, the modular shipping container including a base, the side wall assembly comprising:

a tube hinge;

a first hinge pin assembly including a first hinge pin extending therefrom, the first hinge pin configured to be received within a first end of the tube hinge;

a second hinge pin assembly including a second hinge pin extending therefrom, the second hinge pin configured to be received within a second end of the tube hinge opposite the first end;

the tube hinge, the first hinge pin, and the second hinge pin are disposed above the base;

the tube hinge, the first hinge pin assembly, and the second hinge pin assembly are configured to enable the side wall to pivotally rotate with respect to the base;

the base includes a plurality of hinge apertures; and

the second hinge pin assembly is coupled to the base via a plurality of fastening elements extending through a corresponding plurality of apertures arranged within the second hinge pin assembly, and the plurality of fastening elements interact with the plurality of hinge apertures of the base.

13. The side wall assembly of claim 12 , wherein each of the first hinge pin assembly and the second hinge pin assembly defines an attachment portion configured to engage the base and a flange portion extending substantially perpendicularly from the attachment portion in a direction away from the base.

14. The side wall assembly of claim 13 , wherein the first hinge pin of the first hinge pin assembly and the second hinge pin of the second hinge pin assembly are arranged at a junction between an attachment portion and the flange portion thereof.

15. The side wall assembly of claim 12 , wherein the first hinge pin assembly and the second hinge pin assembly define a generally L-shaped profile.

16. The side wall assembly of claim 12 , further comprising a shim tube coupled to the tube hinge.

17. The side wall assembly of claim 12 , wherein the first hinge pin assembly is removable and the second hinge pin assembly is stationary, and the first hinge pin assembly and the second hinge pin assembly define a first pair of hinge pin assemblies.

18. The side wall assembly of claim 17 , wherein the modular shipping container includes a second side wall, and further comprising:

a second tube hinge coupled to a bottom end of the second side wall; and

a second pair of hinge pin assemblies each configured to engage the second tube hinge to pivotally couple the second side wall to the base,

wherein the second pair of hinge pin assemblies comprises a second stationary hinge pin assembly and a second removable hinge pin assembly.

19. The side wall assembly of claim 18 , wherein each of the second stationary hinge pin assembly and the second removable hinge pin assembly includes an attachment portion configured to engage the base and a flange portion extending substantially perpendicularly therefrom in a direction away from the base.

20. The side wall assembly of claim 19 , wherein each of the second stationary hinge pin assembly and the second removable hinge pin assembly includes a hinge pin extending therefrom and configured to be received within the second tube hinge; and

the hinge pins of the second stationary hinge pin assembly and the second removable hinge pin assembly are attached to the respective flange portion thereof.
