Abstract

An apparatus for applying EM energy to a load may include at least one processor configured to receive information indicative of dissipated energy for each of a plurality of modulation space elements and group a number of the plurality of modulations space elements into at least two subsets based on the information received indicative of dissipated energy. The processor may also be configured to associate a power delivery protocol with each of the at least two subsets wherein the power delivery protocol differs between subsets and regulate energy applied to the load in accordance with each power delivery protocol.

Claims (36)

1. A method of heating an object by applying to the object radio frequency (RF) energy at a plurality of modulation space elements, the method comprising:

determining, for each of the plurality of modulation space elements, a value indicative of energy absorbable by the object; and

applying RF energy to the object based on the values respectively determined for the plurality of modulation space elements, including:

providing a first energy absorption threshold; and

avoiding applying RF energy at one or more of the plurality of modulation space elements, wherein the one or more values respectively determined for the one or more of the plurality of modulation space elements are above the provided first energy absorption threshold.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein each modulation space element is a set of one or more values selected from a group consisting of one or more phase values, one or more relative amplitude values, and one or more frequency values of electromagnetic waves to be applied to the object.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein at least two of the plurality of modulation space elements differ from each other by at least a phase value.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein at least two of the plurality of modulation space elements differ from each other by at least a relative amplitude value.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein at least two of the plurality of modulation space elements differ from each other by at least a frequency value.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

selecting a maximum power that does not cause heating over a predetermined level when the maximum power is absorbed by the object; and

applying RF power to the object at a subset of the plurality of modulation space elements, wherein the RF power absorbed at each of the modulation space elements in the subset is below the maximum power.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein applying RF power to the object at the subset of the plurality of modulation space elements further comprises:

applying different RF power to the object at different modulation space elements in the subset.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein selecting the maximum power further comprises:

selecting the maximum power as a function of spectral information of the object.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

repeating the step of determining the values and the step of applying the RF energy to the object.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

avoiding applying RF energy at at least one of the plurality of modulation space elements, wherein the at least one value determined for the at least one modulation space element is below a second threshold level, the second threshold level being lower than the provided first energy absorption threshold.

11. An apparatus for heating an object by applying to the object radio frequency (RF) energy at a plurality of modulation space elements, the apparatus comprising:

a processor configured to:

determine, for each of the plurality of modulation space elements, a value indicative of energy absorbable by the object;

provide a first energy absorption threshold; and

avoid application of RF energy at one or more of the plurality of modulation space elements, wherein the one or more values respectively determined for the one or more of the plurality of modulation space element are above the provided first energy absorption threshold.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to cause application of RF energy to the object based on the values respectively determined for the plurality of modulation space elements.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein each modulation space element is a set of one or more values selected from a group consisting of one or more phase values, one or more relative amplitude values, and one or more frequency values of electromagnetic waves to be applied to the object.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein at least two of the plurality of modulation space elements differ from each other by at least a phase value.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein at least two of the plurality of modulation space elements differ from each other by at least a relative amplitude value.

16. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein at least two of the plurality of modulation space elements differ from each other by at least a frequency value.

17. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

select a maximum power that does not cause heating over a predetermined level when the maximum power is absorbed by the object; and

cause application of RF power to the object at a subset of the plurality of modulation space elements, wherein the RF power absorbed at each of the modulation space elements in the subset is below the maximum power.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the processor is further configured to cause application of different RF power to the object at different modulation space elements in the subset.

19. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the processor is further configured to select the maximum power based on spectral information of the object.

20. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to avoid application of RF energy to the object at at least one of the plurality of modulation space elements, wherein the at least one value determined for the at least one modulation space element is below a second threshold level, the second threshold level being lower than the provided first energy absorption threshold.
