Claims (36)

1 . A charging accessory for a mobile device, said charging accessory comprising:

a protective case dimensioned to receive and retain the mobile device, the protective case comprising:

a base panel;

a bumper portion configured to extend in a direction transverse to the back panel around the perimeter of the back panel;

a plug configured to electrically couple to a port of the mobile device;

a battery aperture positioned on an inside panel of the protective case; and

a circuit configured to transfer power from the battery to the mobile device and from the charging contacts to the battery and to the mobile device;

a battery dimensioned to fit within the battery aperture, the battery being configured to be user removable and user swappable; and

a charging station including a power source, the charging station being configured to transmit power from the power source to the protective case when the protective case is positioned on the charging station.

2 . The charging accessory of claim 1 , wherein the charging station further comprises:

a concave surface shaped to fit the protective case and to support the protective case;

one or more charging leads positioned within the concave surface and configured to electrically couple to one or more charging contacts of the protective case when the protective case is supported by the concave surface; and

wherein power is transmitted from the charging leads of the charging station to the charging contacts of the protective case.

3 . The charging accessory of claim 1 , wherein the charging station is relatively planar and the charging station is configured to inductively transmit power to the protective case when the protective case is positioned flat against the charging station.

4 . The charging accessory of claim 1 , further comprising a headphone adaptor configured to transmit sound from the mobile device through the device to headphones.

5 . The charging accessory of claim 1 , wherein the headphone adaptor further comprises a female end configured to connect to a headphone jack.

6 . A charging accessory for a mobile device, said charging accessory comprising:

a protective case dimensioned to receive and retain the mobile device, the protective case comprising:

a base panel;

a bumper portion configured to extend in a direction transverse to the back panel around the perimeter of the back panel; and

a battery; and

a charging station including a power source, the charging station being configured to transmit power from the power source to the protective case when the protective case is positioned on the charging station.

7 . The charging accessory of claim 6 , wherein the protective case further comprises a circuit configured to electrically transfer power from the battery to the mobile device.

8 . The charging accessory of claim 7 , wherein the protective case further comprises a plug configured to electrically couple to a port of the mobile device and the circuit transmits power to the port of the mobile device through the plug.

9 . The charging accessory of claim 8 , wherein the protective case further comprises one or more charging contacts electrically connected to the circuit configured to transmit power from the charging contacts to the battery and to the mobile device.

10 . The charging accessory of claim 9 , wherein the charging station further comprises one or more charging leads configured to electrically couple to the one or more charging contacts of the protective case and power is transmitted from the charging leads of the charging station to the charging contacts of the protective case.

11 . The charging accessory of claim 10 , wherein the charging station further comprises a concave surface shaped to fit the protective case and to support the case.

12 . The charging accessory of claim 8 , wherein the charging station is relatively planar and the charging station is configured to transmit power to the protective case when the protective case is positioned flat against the charging station.

13 . The charging accessory of claim 12 , wherein the charging station is configured to inductively transmit power to the protective case.

14 . The charging accessory of claim 8 , wherein the battery is user removable and swappable.

15 . The charging accessory of claim 14 , wherein the protective case further comprises a battery aperture dimensioned to contain the battery.

16 . The charging accessory of claim 15 , wherein the battery aperture is positioned on an inside panel of the protective case.

17 . The charging accessory of claim 8 , further comprising a headphone adaptor configured to transmit sound from the mobile device through the device to headphones.

18 . The charging accessory of claim 17 , wherein the headphone adaptor further comprises a female end configured to connect to a headphone jack.

19 . The charging accessory of claim 8 , wherein the bumper portion is a unitary bumper configured to extend around the entire base portion to define the perimeter of the case, said bumper being detachably secured on top of the base panel.

20 . The charging accessory of claim 8 , wherein the circuit of the protective case comprises one or more printed circuit boards including a controller and firmware that manages the charging and dispersion of power to and from the battery.
