Abstract

Systems and methods for incorporating online user generated media content (e.g., videos) into an interactive video gaming environment are provided. Media assets that are associated with different measures of quality generated by users are stored on a remote server. A player action is received by the remote server. A determination is made as to which one of the plurality of levels of the interactive video gaming environment corresponds to the action. One of the videos associated with one of the measures of quality is selected based on the determination of the level corresponding to the action. The selected video is transmitted to the player.

Claims (46)

1. A method for providing supplemental content, the method comprising:

generating, using processing circuitry, a display of an interactive application for a user, wherein the interactive application is executed by the processing circuitry;

retrieving, from a storage device associated with the user, user profile information that indicates a first measure of progress of the user in the interactive application;

identifying a subset of a plurality of videos, stored on a server, the plurality of videos having been provided by a plurality of users while using the interactive application, wherein each of the subset of the plurality of videos is associated with a different measure of progress in the interactive application;

searching, based on the first measure of progress of the user, the different measures of progress associated with the subset of the plurality of videos to identify a video of the subset of the plurality of videos that is associated with a given measure of progress that matches the first measure of progress of the user;

selecting, using the processing circuitry, the video of the subset of the plurality of videos that is associated with the given measure of progress that matches the first measure of progress of the user; and

updating a feature of the interactive application associated with the user, with the selected video.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

downloading the interactive application from a first source; and

executing the interactive application on a user equipment device comprising the processing circuitry and the storage device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the server is a remote server, and wherein identifying the subset of the plurality of videos comprises searching the remote server for content associated with the interactive application provided by the plurality of users.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the content is an advertisement.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

selecting the video based on an image resolution associated with the video or a duration associated with the video.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

identifying a predetermined level of quality associated with the video;

determining that the identified predetermined level of quality corresponds to the first measure of progress of the user; and

in response to determining that the identified predetermined level of quality corresponds to the first measure of progress of the user, associating the video with the first measure of progress of the user, wherein the selecting comprises selecting the video in response to associating the video with the first measure of progress of the user.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first measure of progress of the user is determined based on a response from the user to an inquiry generated during user interaction with the interactive application, an indication that the user completed a segment of the interactive application, or an indication that the user reached or failed to reach a segment of the interactive application.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the interactive application comprises a plurality of measures of progress, wherein each measure of progress of the plurality of measures of progress is associated with a different level of difficulty.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the determining the first measure of progress of the user in the interactive application is based on a data structure that associates a current position of the user in the interactive application with one of the plurality of measures of progress.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the updating a feature of the interactive application comprises transmitting the selected video to the user for inclusion in the interactive application.

11. A system for providing supplemental content, the system comprising:

a user equipment device configured to generate a display of an interactive application; and

processing circuitry configured to:

execute the interactive gaming application;

retrieve, from a storage device associated with the user, user profile information that indicates a first measure of progress of the user in the interactive application;

identify a subset of a plurality of videos, stored on a server, the plurality of videos having been provided by a plurality of users while using the interactive application, wherein each of the subset of the plurality of videos is associated with a different measure of progress in the interactive application;

search, based on the first measure of progress of the user, the different measures of progress associated with the subset of the plurality of videos to identify a video of the subset of the plurality of videos that is associated with a given measure of progress that matches the first measure of progress of the user;

select the video of the subset of the plurality of videos that is associated with the given measure of progress of the user that matches the first measure of progress of the user; and

update a feature of the interactive application associated with the user, with the selected video.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

the processing circuitry is further configured to download the interactive application from a first source, and

the user equipment device comprises the storage device and the processing circuitry.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the server is a remote server, and wherein the processing circuitry configured to identify the subset of the plurality of videos comprises processing circuitry configured to search the remote server for content associated with the interactive application provided by the plurality of users.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the content is an advertisement.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

select the video based on an image resolution associated with the video or a duration associated with the video.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

identify a predetermined level of quality associated with the video;

determine that the identified predetermined level of quality corresponds to the first measure of progress of the user; and

in response to determining that the identified predetermined level of quality corresponds to the first measure of progress of the user, associate the video with the first measure of progress of the user, wherein the processing circuitry configured to select comprises processing circuitry configured to select the video in response to associating the video with the first measure of progress of the user.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first measure of progress of the user is determined based on a response from the user to an inquiry generated during user interaction with the interactive application, an indication that the user completed a segment of the interactive application, or an indication that the user reached or failed to reach a segment of the interactive application.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the interactive application comprises a plurality of measures of progress, wherein each measure of progress of the plurality of measures of progress is associated with a different level of difficulty.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured to determine the first measure of progress of the user in the interactive application based on a data structure that associates a current position of the user in the interactive application with one of the plurality of measures of progress.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processing circuitry configured to update a feature of the interactive application comprises processing circuitry configured to transmit the selected video to the user for inclusion in the interactive application.
