Abstract

A method of discovering a device to be discovered in a communication network having multiple interconnected nodes includes transmitting, by a discoverer, at least one beacon signal including an IP address to the network. The device to be discovered receives the at least one beacon signal. The device to be discovered configures the IP address located in the at least one beacon signal. Additionally, the device to be discovered transmits an advertisement to a server specified by the discoverer.

Claims (21)

1. A method of enabling a device to communicate with a remote management entity in a communication network, the method comprising:

transmitting, by a discoverer, a beacon signal including an IP address to the network, wherein the device and the discoverer are on different IP subnets;

receiving the beacon signal by the device;

notifying the discoverer by the device sending an advertisement message to a server in the communication network, wherein the server is specified by the IP address; and

receiving the advertisement message by the discoverer.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the discoverer assigns an address to the device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the address is one of a layer-2 address, a layer-3 address and a layer-2/layer-3 address.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the advertisement message provides information to the device on how to obtain an address from other services on the network where the device is located.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the discoverer and the remote management entity are the same.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the beacon signal comprises a stateless packet that can be broadcast across one or more IP subnets.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the stateless packet is encoded to be transparent to any router, gateway or firewall.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the beacon signal is a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) message.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the DHCP message is unsolicited.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the DHCP message is encrypted.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device is passively waiting to be discovered.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the IP address is on the same node as the discoverer.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the beacon signal is transmitted using a broadcast.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the beacon signal is transmitted as a directed unicast packet to a previously detected device.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the advertisement comprises one or more of: port identifier, device name, device description, IP address of the device, serial number, firmware/software revision, base MAC address, configuration status, platform identifier, slot identifier, and module information.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising configuring the IP address in the beacon signal by the device.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising enabling management access to put the device into a state where it can receive further configuration, control, management information or firmware information from the remote management entity.
