Abstract

A machine for transitioning a box cutout from a flat configuration to a collapsed box configuration includes a first drive wheel configured to drive a box cutout towards a plunging area; a plunger configured to apply force to a central portion of a bottom panel of the box cutout so as to fold the box about a lateral bisecting axis and propel at least a portion of the box cutout downward; and opposed second and third drive wheels configured to grab a box cutout propelled downward by the plunger and further draw the box cutout downward into a collapsed box configuration within a collection area. A box cutout transitioned to a collapsed box configuration in this manner may include a bottom panel having plurality of unbroken minor score lines and broken major score lines.

Claims (33)

1. A machine configured to transition a box cutout, comprising:

(a) a plunger located in a plunging area and configured to apply force to a central portion of a box cutout located below the plunger so as to effect downward movement thereof;

(b) a detector configured to detect plunging of the plunger;

(c) means for engaging a box cutout that has been plunged downward by the plunger, facilitating collapse of the box cutout into a collapsed upright orientation, and propelling the box cutout further downward to a collection area located below the plunging area; and

(d) a collector located in the collection area and configured to move a box cutout in the collapsed upright orientation into a collection pen;

(e) wherein the collector is further configured to elevate a particular box cutout in the collapsed upright orientation, when the particular box cutout is moved into the collection pen, based on a count of plunges of the plunger detected by the detector.

2. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the means for engaging, facilitating, and propelling comprises opposed grab wheels located below the plunging area.

3. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the collector is configured to elevate one out of a predetermined number of box cutouts in the collection pen.

4. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the collector is configured to elevate one out of every five box cutouts in the collection pen.

5. The machine of claim 1 , further comprising one or more glue applicators configured to apply glue to a box cutout before plunging, whereby such box cutout is maintained in a collapsed box configuration after being transitioned by the machine.

6. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the detector is located at a top of the machine and the collection pen is located at a bottom of the machine.

7. The machine of claim 1 , wherein the detector is a laser detector.

8. The machine of claim 7 , wherein the laser detector is directed toward a top of the plunger when the plunger is not descended.

9. A machine configured to transition a box cutout, comprising:

(a) a plunger located in a plunging area and configured to apply force to a central portion of a box cutout located below the plunger so as to effect downward movement thereof;

(b) means for detecting plunging of the plunger;

(c) means for engaging a box cutout that has been plunged downward by the plunger, facilitating collapse of the box cutout into a collapsed upright orientation, and propelling the box cutout further downward to a collection area located below the plunging area; and

(d) a collector located in the collection area and configured to place a box cutout in a collection pen while maintaining such box cutout in the collapsed upright orientation, and further configured to elevate a particular collected box cutout, when placing that particular box cutout in the collection pen, based on a count of plunges of the plunger that are detected.

10. The machine of claim 9 , wherein the means for engaging, facilitating, and propelling comprises opposed grab wheels located below the plunging area.

11. The machine of claim 9 , wherein the collector is configured to elevate one out of a predetermined number of box cutouts in the collection pen.

12. The machine of claim 9 , wherein the collector is configured to elevate one out of every five box cutouts in the collection pen.

13. The machine of claim 9 , further comprising one or more glue applicators configured to apply glue to a box cutout before the box cutout is plunged by the plunger, whereby such box cutout is maintained in a collapsed box configuration after being transitioned by the machine.

14. The machine of claim 9 , wherein the means for detecting is located at a top of the machine and the collection pen is located at a bottom of the machine.

15. The machine of claim 9 , wherein the means for detecting is a laser detector.

16. A machine configured to transition a box cutout, comprising:

(a) a plunger located in a plunging area and configured to apply force to a central portion of a box cutout located below the plunger so as to effect downward movement thereof;

(b) means for detecting plunging of the plunger;

(c) means for engaging a box cutout that has been plunged downward by the plunger, facilitating collapse of the box cutout into an upright orientation, and propelling the box cutout further downward to a collection area; and

(d) means for moving a box cutout from the collection area into a collection pen and elevating a particular collected box cutout, when the particular collected box cutout is being moved into the collection pen, based on a count of plunges of the plunger that are detected.

17. The machine of claim 16 , wherein the means for engaging, facilitating, and propelling comprises opposed grab wheels located below the plunging area.

18. The machine of claim 16 , wherein the means for moving and elevating elevates one out of a predetermined number of box cutouts in the collection pen.

19. The machine of claim 16 , wherein the means for moving and elevating elevates one out of every five box cutouts in the collection pen.

20. The machine of claim 16 , further comprising one or more glue applicators configured to apply glue to a box cutout before the box cutout is plunged by the plunger, whereby such box cutout is maintained in a collapsed box configuration after being transitioned by the machine.
