Abstract

The present disclosure provides an energy storage device comprising at least one electrochemical cell comprising a negative current collector, a negative electrode in electrical communication with the negative current collector, an electrolyte in electrical communication with the negative electrode, a positive electrode in electrical communication with the electrolyte and a positive current collector in electrical communication with the positive electrode. The negative electrode comprises an alkali metal. Upon discharge, the electrolyte provides charged species of the alkali metal. The positive electrode can include a Group IIIA, IVA, VA and VIA of the periodic table of the elements, or a transition metal (e.g., Group 12 element).

Claims (25)

1. An energy storage device, comprising:

a first electrode comprising a first material, wherein said first material comprises calcium;

a second electrode comprising a second material, wherein said second material comprises antimony; and

a liquid electrolyte between said first electrode and said second electrode, wherein said liquid electrolyte is capable of conducting ions from said first electrode,

wherein said energy storage device is configured such that, upon discharge of said energy storage device, said first material and said second material react to form an intermetallic between said second electrode and said electrolyte, and

wherein said first electrode or said second electrode is solid at an operating temperature of said energy storage device.

2. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein said operating temperature is from about 250° C. to about 525° C.

3. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein said operating temperature is from about 400° C. to about 525° C.

4. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein said first electrode is a liquid at said operating temperature.

5. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein said first electrode is solid at said operating temperature.

6. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein said second electrode is solid at said operating temperature.

7. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein said first electrode and said second electrode are solid at said operating temperature.

8. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein said first material further comprises lithium, magnesium, or any combination thereof.

9. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein said energy storage device further comprises a membrane between said first electrode and said second electrode.

10. The energy storage device of claim 9 , wherein said intermetallic forms between said second electrode and said membrane.

11. The energy storage device of claim 9 , wherein said membrane is substantially non-porous to said second material.

12. The energy storage device of claim 9 , wherein said membrane is substantially porous to said first material.

13. The energy storage device of claim 9 , wherein said membrane is electrically coupled to said second electrode.

14. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein said intermetallic is solid at said operating temperature.

15. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein said liquid electrolyte comprises a calcium halide salt.

16. The energy storage device of claim 15 , wherein said liquid electrolyte further comprises a lithium halide salt, a sodium halide salt, a potassium halide salt, or any combination thereof.

17. The energy storage device of claim 1 , wherein said energy storage device further comprises a crucible or coating.

18. The energy storage device of claim 17 , wherein said coating has a thickness that is less than about 1 millimeter.

19. The energy storage device of claim 17 , wherein said crucible has a thickness from about 3 millimeters to about 30 millimeters.

20. The energy storage device of claim 17 , wherein said crucible or coating is non-wetting with respect to said second material.
