Paintball loader drive system
View Patent ↗The present invention is directed to a ball feed mechanism and associated method for use in a paintball loader. The ball feed mechanism includes a feeder which conveys or impels balls toward a feed neck, and a drive member which is concentric with the feeder. The feeder is coupled to the drive member. An electric motor is used to rotate the drive member which in turn causes the feeder to rotate. The feed mechanism includes sensors which detect the motion of the feeder and the drive member. A controller determines the position of the feeder relative to the drive member and actuates a motor when necessary.
1. A projectile loader in communication with a firing mechanism configured to launch projectiles, the projectile loader comprising a feed mechanism and a non-contact sensor configured to detect a change in position of a portion of the feed mechanism via a non-contact sensor.
2. The projectile loader of claim 1 , wherein the feed mechanism comprises a moveable feeder and a motor for operating the feeder.
3. The projectile loader of claim 1 , further comprising a controller in communication with the sensor.
4. The projectile loader of claim 3 , wherein the controller comprises a microprocessor.
5. The projectile loader of claim 3 , wherein the feed mechanism comprises at least one indexing member detectable by the sensor, and the controller determines movement of the feeder based on a signal provided by the sensor, indicative of the movement of the indexing member.
6. The projectile loader of claim 5 , wherein the sensor detects a change in a position of the indexing member, and the controller determines movement of the feeder based on a change and operates the motor based on a change.
7. A method of controlling a feed mechanism of a projectile loader in communication with a firing mechanism configured to launch projectiles, the method comprising detecting a change in position of a portion of the feed mechanism via a non-contact sensor.
8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising controlling a motor of the feed mechanism in response to directly detecting movement of at least a moveable portion of the feed mechanism, wherein the detection is performed by a sensor.
9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising a controller in communication with the sensor.
10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the controller is a microprocessor.
11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the feed mechanism comprises a moveable feeder.
12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the controlling of the motor comprises starting, stopping, speeding up, slowing down, or reversing the motor.
13. A projectile loader in communication with a firing mechanism configured to launch projectiles, the projectile loader comprising a sensor, wherein the sensor is configured to directly detect movement of at least a moveable portion of a feed mechanism of the projectile loader, and wherein the feed mechanism comprises a moveable feeder and a motor for operating the feeder.
14. The projectile loader of claim 13 , further comprising a controller in communication with the sensor.
15. The projectile loader of claim 14 , wherein the controller comprises a microprocessor.
