Abstract

“Smart” connectors with embedded processors, measurement circuits and control circuits are disclosed for establishing a “contactless” radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic (EM) Extremely High Frequency (EHF) communications link between two electronic devices having host systems. The connectors are capable of monitoring, controlling, and directing (managing) link operation to dynamically adapt to conditions, as well as monitoring and altering (or modifying) data passing through the connector, and selecting a protocol suitable for a communications session. The connectors are capable of identifying the type of content being transferred, providing authentication and security services, and enabling application support for the host systems based on the type of connection or the type of content. The connectors may operate independently of the host systems, and may perform at least one of sensing proximity of a nearby object; detecting a shape of a nearby object; and detecting vibrations.

Claims (37)

1. A method for providing application support for a host system of a first device that uses a contactless communications link existing between first and second contactless connectors, wherein the first contactless connector is associated with the first device and the second contactless connector is associated with a second device, the method implemented in the first contactless connector, the method comprising:

controlling operation of the contactless communications link, wherein the contactless communications link is actively conveying contactless signals between the first and second contactless connectors;

determining at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link, wherein the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link comprises performance metrics of the contactless communications link; and

performing application support for the host system based on the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link, including the performance metrics of the contactless communications link, wherein the application support comprise an application running on the host system.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link comprises register settings of the first contactless connector, and wherein the performing application support comprises activating an application in the host system based on the register settings.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the performing application support further comprises initiating functions with the activated application.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link comprises register settings of the first contactless connector, and wherein the performing application support comprises processing data being received over the contactless data communications link based on the register settings.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link comprises information about a type of data being transferred over the contactless communications link.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link comprises at least one of:

tracking and logging data passing through the first contactless connector; and

tracking and logging characteristics of the contactless communications link.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first contactless connector is further capable of performing at least one of:

waking up the host system;

initiating actions in the host system; and

providing interrupts to the host system based on a quality of the contactless communications link.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link comprises data handling permissions, and wherein the performing application support comprises preventing data of a particular type from being transferred to the host system based on the data handling permissions.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link comprises identification of data type and security risk associated therewith, and wherein the performing application support comprises directing data received via the contactless communications to a specific memory location in the host system based on the identification of data type and security risk associated therewith.

10. A first device that uses a contactless communications link to communicate with a second device, the first device comprising:

a host system;

a first contactless connector communicatively coupled to the host system, the first contactless connector operative to:

control operation of the contactless communications link, wherein the contactless communications link is actively conveying contactless signals between the first and second devices;

determine at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link;

track and log characteristics of the contactless communications link; and

perform application support for the host system based on the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link and on the tracked and logged characteristics of the communications link, wherein the application support comprises an application running on the host system.

11. The first device of claim 10 , wherein the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link comprises register settings of the first contactless connector, and wherein the first contactless connector is operative to activate an application in the host system based on the register settings.

12. The first device of claim 11 , wherein the first contactless connector is operative to initiate functions with the activated application.

13. The first device of claim 10 , wherein the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link comprises register settings of the first contactless connector, and wherein the first contactless connector is operative to process data being received over the contactless data communications link based on the register settings.

14. The first device of claim 10 , wherein the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link comprises information about a type of data being transferred over the contactless communications link.

15. The first device of claim 10 , wherein the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link comprises performance metrics of the contactless communications link.

16. The first device of claim 10 , wherein the first contactless connector is operative to

track and log data passing through the first contactless connector.

17. The first device of claim 10 , wherein the first contactless connector is operative to perform at least one of:

wake up the host system;

initiate actions in the host system; and

provide interrupts to the host system based on a quality of the contactless communications link.

18. The first device of claim 10 , wherein the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link comprises data handling permissions, and wherein the first contactless connector is operative to prevent data of a particular type from being transferred to the host system based on the data handling permissions.

19. The first device of claim 10 , wherein the determined at least one characteristic of the contactless communications link comprises identification of data type and security risk associated therewith, and wherein the first contactless connector is operative to direct data received via the contactless communications to a specific memory location in the host system based on the identification of data type and security risk associated therewith.
