Abstract

A system and methods for promoting fusion across an intervertebral disc space, the system including a system of spinal fusion implants including a distal implant, a proximal implant and a medial implant positioned therebetween, wherein the medial implant has a flexible anterior wall capable of being deformed when a force is exerted upon it.

Claims (26)

1. An intervertebral implant system useful for promoting fusion across an intervertebral disc space comprising:

a. a first implant having a top surface, a bottom surface, a leading end wall, a trailing end wall, an anterior wall and a posterior wall;

b. a second implant having a top surface, a bottom surface, a leading end wall, a trailing end wall, a flexible anterior wall and a rigid posterior wall, said rigid posterior wall having a height that is greater than a height of the flexible anterior wall, said leading end wall, trailing end wall, flexible anterior wall and rigid posterior wall defining a fusion aperture; and

c. a third implant having a top surface, a bottom surface, a leading end wall, a trailing end wall, an anterior wall and a posterior wall.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the flexible anterior wall of the second implant is configured to deform in the anterior direction.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first implant has a first length, the second implant has a second length, and the third implant has a third length and wherein said second length is greater than said first length and said third length.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first implant and the third implant are identical in shape.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the length of the first implant is equal to the length of the third implant.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first implant and third implant include a fusion aperture.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first implant and third implant include a fusion aperture.

8. An intervertebral implant system useful for promoting fusion across an intervertebral disc space comprising

a. a first implant having a top surface, a bottom surface, a leading end wall, a trailing end wall, an anterior wall and a posterior wall;

b. a second implant having a top surface, a bottom surface, a leading end wall, a trailing end wall, a flexible anterior wall and a rigid posterior wall, said leading end wall, trailing end wall, flexible anterior wall and rigid posterior wall defining a fusion aperture; and

c. a third implant having a top surface, a bottom surface, a leading end wall, a trailing end wall, an anterior wall and a posterior wall, wherein the first implant and the third implant are identical in shape.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein said rigid posterior wall of said second implant has a height that is greater than a height of the flexible anterior wall of the second implant.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the flexible anterior wall of the second implant is configured to deform in the anterior direction.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein each of the first implant and third implant include a fusion aperture.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the a length of the second implant is greater than a length of the first and third implants.

13. An intervertebral implant system comprising:

a. a first implant having a top surface, a bottom surface, a leading end wall, a trailing end wall, an anterior wall and a posterior wall; and

b. a second implant having a top surface, a bottom surface, a leading end wall, a trailing end wall, a flexible anterior wall and a rigid posterior wall, said leading end wall, trailing end wall, flexible anterior wall and rigid posterior wall defining a fusion aperture, wherein (i) the flexible anterior wall of the second implant is configured to deform in the anterior direction and (ii) the rigid posterior wall of said second implant has a height that is greater than a height of the flexible anterior wall of the second implant.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first implant and the second implant are identical in shape.

15. The system of claim 13 further comprising a third implant having a top surface, a bottom surface, a leading end wall, a trailing end wall, an anterior wall and a posterior wall.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein the first implant has a first length, the second implant has a second length, and the third implant has a third length and wherein said second length is greater than said first length and said third length.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the length of the first implant is equal to the length of the third implant.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the length of the first implant is equal to the length of the third implant.
