Abstract

A method includes, with a distributed telecommunication component, providing a plurality of first type nodes, each first type node configured to perform a signaling function. The method further include, with the distributed telecommunication component, providing a plurality of second type nodes, each second type node configured to perform a media bearing function. At least one of the plurality of bearer nodes is geographically separate by a predetermined distance from at least one of the plurality of control nodes.

Claims (31)

1. A method comprising:

with a distributed Session Border Controller (SBC), providing a plurality of control nodes, each control node configured to establish a connection between a first endpoint and a second endpoint, at least two of the plurality of control nodes being geographically separate; and

with the distributed SBC, providing a plurality of bearer nodes, each bearer node configured to bear media traffic between the first endpoint and the second endpoint at least two of the plurality of bearer nodes being geographically separate and at least one of the bearer nodes being geographically separate from at least one of the plurality of control nodes;

with the distributed SBC, changing a total number of one of the plurality of control nodes and the plurality of bearer nodes, in response to a predetermined event.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the plurality of control nodes are physical nodes.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the plurality of control nodes are virtual nodes.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bearer node is a physical node.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bearer node is a virtual node.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bearer node and least one of the first and second of the plurality of control nodes are in different datacenters.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bearer node and least one of the first and second of the plurality of control nodes are separated by at least 100 miles.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bearer node and least one of the first and second of the plurality of control nodes are separated by at least 1000 miles.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bearer node and the control nodes communicate using a level 3 routing protocol.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bearer node is centrally located between the at least two control nodes.

11. A method comprising:

with a distributed telecommunication component, providing a plurality of first type nodes, each first type node configured to perform exclusively one of a control function and a bearer function; and

with the distributed telecommunication component, providing a plurality of second type nodes, each second type node configured to perform exclusively the other of a control function and a bearer function;

at least one of the plurality of first type nodes is geographically separate by a predetermined distance from at least one of the plurality of second type nodes; and

with the distributed telecommunication component, in response to a predetermined event, changing a total number of the first type nodes.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the predetermined distance corresponds to a distance between a first datacenter that houses the at least one of the plurality of first type nodes and a second datacenter that houses the at least one of the second type nodes.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the predetermined distance comprises at least 100 miles.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the predetermined distance comprises at least 1000 miles.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein each of the plurality of second type nodes is geographically located within a 50 mile radius and at least one of the plurality of first type nodes is separated from any of the first type nodes by at least 100 miles.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein both the first type nodes and the second type nodes include both virtual and physical nodes.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein a virtual node's location corresponds to a location of the physical hardware supporting that virtual node.

18. A distributed telecommunication system configured to handle telecommunication sessions between networks, the system comprising;

a plurality of control nodes, each control node configured to establish a connection between a first endpoint and a second endpoint; and

a plurality of bearer nodes, each bearer node configured to provide a common media platform between a first of the plurality of control nodes and a second of the plurality of control nodes, the plurality of bearer nodes being associated with different pieces of hardware than the plurality of control nodes;

wherein at least one of the plurality of control nodes is in a first geographic location and at least one of the plurality of bearer nodes is in a second geographic location, the first geographic location being separated from the second geographic location; and

a distributed telecommunication component, configured to change a total number of one of the plurality of control nodes and the plurality of bearer nodes, in response to a predetermined event.

19. The distributed telecommunication system of claim 18 , wherein the at least one of the bearer nodes is centrally located between at least two of the plurality of control nodes.

20. The distributed telecommunication system of claim 18 , wherein each of the plurality of bearer nodes are geographically located within a 50 mile radius and at least one of the plurality control nodes is separated from any of the bearer nodes by at least 100 miles.
