Abstract

A system that includes a multicarrier transceiver including a processor and memory. The system transmitting a packet using a forward error correction encoder and an interleaver, wherein the packet comprises a header field and a plurality of bytes, and wherein the header field comprises a sequence identifier (SID) and receiving at least one message using a forward error correction decoder and without using a deinterleaver, wherein the at least one message is received in a single DMT symbol and wherein the at least one message includes an acknowledgement (ACK) or a negative acknowledgement (NACK) of the transmitted packet. An SNR margin of the at least one message is greater than an SNR margin of the packet.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the SNR margin of the at least one message is greater than 6 dB.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver is operable to retransmit the packet using the forward error correction encoder and the interleaver.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one message indicates at least one count value associated with the packet.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a linecard that is capable of transporting video, voice and data.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a customer premises equipment that is capable of transporting video, voice and data.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the packet is an IP packet or an Ethernet packet or an Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cell or a Packet Transfer Mode (PTM) packet or a Packet Transfer Mode-Transmission Convergence (PTM-TC) codeword.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the packet comprises a plurality of codewords Reed-Solomon codewords or a plurality of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells.

9. An apparatus comprising:

a multicarrier transceiver including a processor and memory operable to reduce a packet error rate by:

receiving, by the transceiver, a packet using a forward error correction decoder and a deinterleaver, wherein the packet comprises a header field and a plurality of bytes, and wherein the header field comprises a sequence identifier (SID); and

transmitting, by the transceiver, at least one messages using a forward error correction encoder and without using an interleaver, wherein the at least one message is transmitted in a single discrete multitone (DMT) symbol, and

wherein at least one message of the plurality of messages includes an acknowledgement (ACK) or a negative acknowledgement (NACK) of the received packet, and

wherein an SNR margin of the at least one message is greater than an SNR margin of the packet; and

reducing the packet error rate by retransmitting, by the transceiver and when there is the negative acknowledgement (NACK) in the at least one message, the packet.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the SNR margin of the at least one message is greater than 6 dB.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the transceiver is operable to receive a retransmitted packet using the forward error correction decoder and the deinterleaver.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the at least one message indicates at least one count value associated with the packet.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus is a linecard that is capable of transporting video, voice and data.

14. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus is a customer premises equipment that is capable of transporting video, voice and data.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the packet is an IP packet or an Ethernet packet or an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) cell or a Packet Transfer Mode (PTM) packet or a Packet Transfer Mode-Transmission Convergence (PTM-TC) codeword.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the packet comprises a plurality of codewords Reed-Solomon codewords or a plurality of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) cells.

17. A method to reduce a packet error rate in a multicarrier transceiver comprising:

transmitting, by the transceiver, a packet using a forward error correction encoder and an interleaver, wherein the packet comprises a header field and a plurality of bytes, and wherein the header field comprises a sequence identifier (SID); and

receiving, by the transceiver, at least one message using a forward error correction decoder and without using a deinterleaver, wherein the at least one message is received in a single discrete multitone (DMT) symbol and wherein the at least one message includes an acknowledgement (ACK) or a negative acknowledgement (NACK) of the transmitted packet,

wherein an SNR margin of the at least one message is greater than an SNR margin of the packet; and

reducing the packet error rate by retransmitting, by the transceiver and when there is the negative acknowledgement (NACK) in the at least one message, the packet.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the SNR margin of the at least one message is greater than 6 dB.
