Abstract

Polycyclocarbonate compounds and upgraded molecular weight polymers made from such compounds are provided. The polymers have particular utility in coating compositions, especially for use on food and beverage contact substrates that are formed into or will be formed into containers or container components.

Claims (42)

1. A method of forming a polycyclocarbonate compound having at least two carbonate-containing rings, the method comprising reacting reactants including:

a first compound including at least two carbonyl functional groups;

a second compound having a carbon-carbon triple bond; and

carbon dioxide.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the carbonate-containing rings are 5-member rings, and wherein the polycyclocarbonate compound comprises a dicyclocarbonate compound.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least two carbonyl functional groups are each a carbonyl functional group other than an ester group or a carboxylic acid group.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the at least two carbonyl functional groups is independently a ketone or an aldehyde group.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first compound includes only two carbonyl functional groups other than ester or carboxylic acid groups.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first compound is reacted with the second compound to form an adduct which is subsequently reacted with the carbon dioxide to form the polycarbonate compound.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first compound is of the below formula:

wherein:

each R 1 is independently a hydrogen atom or an organic group;

R 2 , if present, is a divalent group; and

n is 0 or 1.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein:

each R 1 is independently a hydrogen atom or an organic group that includes from 1 to 50 carbon atoms; and

n is 1 and R 2 is a divalent organic group that includes from 1 to 50 carbon atoms.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein n is 1 and R 2 includes a cyclic group.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the cyclic group comprises an aryl or heteroaryl group.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first compound comprises a diketone.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first compound comprises a dialdehyde.

13. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first compound has an atomic weight of less than 1,000 Daltons.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first compound comprises acetylacetone, glutaraldehyde, diacetylbenzene, 2,6-pyridinedicarboxaldehyde, phthaldialdehyde, terephthaldehyde, isophthalaldehyde, 2-methyl-1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dione, 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedione, 1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione, and combinations thereof, or a mixture or variant thereof.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second compound has the structure R 3 —C≡C—R 3 , wherein:

each R 3 is independently a hydrogen atom or an organic group, and

at least one R 3 is a hydrogen atom.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein each R 3 is a hydrogen atom, and wherein the second compound has an atomic weight of less than 1,000 Daltons.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second compound comprises acetylene, phenylacetylene, cyclopentylacetylene, cyclohexylacetylene, cyclopropylacetylene, 1-ethynylcyclohexene, 4-ethynyltoluene, 4-ethynylanisole, 1-butyne, 3-methyle-1-butyne, 3,3-dimethyl-1-butyne, 4-phenyl-1-butyne, 2-methyl-1-buten-3-yne, propyene, 3-phenyl-1-propyne, 1-pentyne, 5-phenyl-1-pentyne, 1-hexyne, 3-methyl-1-hexyne, 5-methyl-1-hexyne, 1-heptyne, 1-octyne, 1-decyne, or a mixture or variant thereof.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polycyclocarbonate compound is unsaturated.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the two carbonate-containing rings of the polycyclocarbonate compound each include an organic group that is attached to a carbon atom of the ring via a carbon-carbon double bond.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polycyclocarbonate compound has the below structure:
