Abstract

Systems, methods, and apparatus to identify media presentation devices are disclosed. An example method includes associating respective ones of a first and a second network device with respective ones of at least two different pseudo domain name service (DNS) servers, wherein the pseudo DNS servers do not provide domain name-to-IP address translation. Crediting the first network device with accessing media in response to receiving a first domain name service query at a first pseudo DNS server from a first public Internet protocol address. Crediting the second network device with accessing media in response to receiving a second domain name service query at a second pseudo DNS server from the first public Internet protocol address.

Claims (30)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a registrar to receive an association of respective ones of a first and a second network device with respective ones of at least two different pseudo domain name service (DNS) servers, wherein the pseudo DNS servers do not provide domain name-to-IP address translation;

a first query processor to credit the first network device with accessing media in response to receiving a first domain name service query at a first pseudo DNS server from a first public Internet protocol address; and

a second query processor to credit the second network device with accessing media in response to receiving a second domain name service query at a second pseudo DNS server from the first public Internet protocol address.

2. The apparatus as described in claim 1 , wherein the first and second query processors are the same query processor.

3. The apparatus as described in claim 1 , wherein the first pseudo DNS server has a different address than the second pseudo DNS server.

4. The apparatus as described in claim 1 , wherein the first public Internet protocol address is associated with a panelist household.

5. The apparatus as described in claim 4 , wherein the first network device is associated with a first panelist in the panelist household and the second network device is associated with a second, different, panelist in the panelist household.

6. The apparatus as described in claim 4 , wherein the first network device and the second network device are associated with a first panelist in the panelist household.

7. The apparatus as described in claim 1 , wherein the first pseudo DNS server is to reply to the first domain name service query with a redirect message identifying a DNS server to serve DNS information for a DNS name identified in the first domain name serve query.

8. A method of media activity in a network, the method comprising:

associating respective ones of a first and a second network device with respective ones of at least two different pseudo domain name service (DNS) servers, wherein the pseudo DNS servers do not provide domain name-to-IP address translation;

crediting the first network device with accessing media in response to receiving a first domain name service query at a first pseudo DNS server from a first public Internet protocol address; and

crediting the second network device with accessing media in response to receiving a second domain name service query at a second pseudo DNS server from the first public Internet protocol address.

9. The method as described in claim 8 , wherein the first and second pseudo DNS servers are hosted at a same server.

10. The method as described in claim 8 , wherein the first pseudo DNS server has a different address than the second pseudo DNS server.

11. The method as described in claim 8 , wherein the first public Internet protocol address is associated with a panelist household.

12. The method as described in claim 11 , wherein the first network device is associated with a first panelist in the panelist household and the second network device is associated with a second, different, panelist in the panelist household.

13. The method as described in claim 11 , wherein the first network device and the second network device are associated with a first panelist in the panelist household.

14. The method as described in claim 8 , wherein the first pseudo DNS server is to reply to the first domain name service query with a redirect message identifying a DNS server to serve DNS information for a DNS name identified in the first domain name serve query.

15. A tangible machine-readable medium comprising instructions which, when executed, cause a machine to at least:

associate respective ones of a first and a second network device with respective ones of at least two different pseudo domain name service (DNS) servers, wherein the pseudo DNS servers do not provide domain name-to-IP address translation;

credit the first network device with accessing media in response to receiving a first domain name service query at a first pseudo DNS server from a first public Internet protocol address; and

credit the second network device with accessing media in response to receiving a second domain name service query at a second pseudo DNS server from the first public Internet protocol address.

16. The machine-readable medium as described in claim 15 , wherein the first and second pseudo DNS servers are hosted at a same server.

17. The machine-readable medium as described in claim 15 , wherein the first pseudo DNS server has a different address than the second pseudo DNS server.

18. The machine-readable medium as described in claim 15 wherein the first public Internet protocol address is associated with a panelist household.

19. The machine-readable medium as described in claim 18 , wherein the first network device is associated with a first panelist in the panelist household and the second network device is associated with a second, different, panelist in the panelist household.

20. The machine-readable medium as described in claim 18 , wherein the first network device and the second network device are associated with a first panelist in the panelist household.

21. The machine-readable medium as described in claim 15 , wherein the first pseudo DNS server is to reply to the first domain name service query with a redirect message identifying a DNS server to serve DNS information for a DNS name identified in the first domain name serve query.
