Abstract

A heart pump is disclosed herein. The heart pump can include a cannula having one or more outlets. An impeller can be positioned in the cannula. The impeller can be configured to pump blood through the outlets along a longitudinal axis when the impeller is rotated at an operational speed. The heart pump can be configured to adjust an effective area of the outlets while the impeller is rotating or to provide relative motion between the cannula and the impeller along the longitudinal axis while the impeller is rotating.

Claims (33)

1. A heart pump comprising:

an expandable cannula having one or more outlets, the expandable cannula configured to expand from a stored configuration to a deployed configuration upon being advanced to the heart of a patient; and

an impeller positioned in the expandable cannula, the impeller configured to pump blood through the one or more outlets along a longitudinal axis when the impeller is rotated at an operational speed,

wherein the heart pump is configured to adjust a flow rate through the one or more outlets by adjusting an effective area of the one or more outlets while the impeller is rotating or by providing relative motion between the expandable cannula and the impeller along the longitudinal axis while the impeller is rotating.

2. The heart pump of claim 1 , wherein the impeller is configured to move axially relative to the expandable cannula.

3. The heart pump claim 1 , wherein the heart pump is configured to increase the flow rate through the one or more outlets by moving the impeller from a first location to a second location, the second location nearer the one or more outlets than the first location.

4. The heart pump of claim 1 , further comprising a sleeve disposed about the expandable cannula, the sleeve configured to move axially relative to the cannula.

5. The heart pump of claim 4 , wherein the sleeve has an end, the sleeve configured such that the end is movable over the one or more outlets to at least partially occlude the one or more outlets.

6. The heart pump of claim 5 , wherein the end is movable over the one or more outlets to fully occlude the one or more outlets.

7. A method of operating a heart pump, the method comprising:

advancing a cannula and an impeller to a target location in a patient through the vasculature of the patient, the impeller being positioned in the cannula;

activating the heart pump to rotate the impeller to pump blood through the cannula along a longitudinal axis; and

providing relative motion between the impeller and the cannula along the longitudinal axis while the impeller is rotating.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

measuring a parameter associated with the pumped blood before providing the relative motion; and

measuring the parameter after providing the relative motion.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the parameter comprises an average flow rate over a predetermined period of time.

10. The method of claim 8 , the method further comprising maintaining the relative position between the impeller and the cannula along the longitudinal axis if the measured parameter preferentially improves after providing the relative motion.

11. The method of claim 8 , the method further comprising providing additional relative motion between the impeller and the cannula along the longitudinal axis if the measured parameter does not preferentially improve after providing the relative motion.

12. A method of operating a heart pump, the method comprising:

advancing a cannula and an impeller to a target location in a patient through the vasculature of the patient, the impeller being positioned in the cannula, the cannula comprising one or more outlets;

activating the heart pump to rotate the impeller to pump blood through the cannula along a longitudinal axis; and

adjusting an effective area of the one or more outlets while the impeller is rotating.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein adjusting the effective area comprises moving a sleeve relative to the cannula along the longitudinal axis.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the sleeve is disposed about an outer surface of the cannula.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the sleeve has an end, the method further comprising moving the end of the sleeve over the one or more outlets to at least partially occlude the one or more outlets.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising moving the end of the sleeve over the one or more outlets to fully occlude the one or more outlets.

17. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

measuring a parameter associated with the pumped blood before adjusting the effective area of the one or more outlets; and

measuring the parameter after adjusting the effective area of the one or more outlets.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the parameter comprises an average flow rate over a predetermined period of time.

19. The method of claim 17 , the method further comprising maintaining the current effective area of the one or more outlets if the measured parameter preferentially improves after adjusting the effective area.

20. The method of claim 17 , the method further comprising further adjusting the effective area if the measured parameter does not preferentially improve after adjusting the effective area.
