Abstract

A controller, which may be used in a transdermal drug delivery apparatus, includes a housing, a pushing mechanism mounted for moving relative to the housing, a force provider positioned between the housing and the pushing mechanism for moving the pushing mechanism relative to the housing, and a latching mechanism for selectively restricting and allowing relative movement between the housing and the pushing mechanism. The pushing mechanism may be configured for pushing against a reservoir of the transdermal drug delivery apparatus. The latching mechanism may include flexible arms extending between the opposite ends of the latching mechanism, and the latching mechanism may be configured so that the arms release the pushing mechanism in response to the opposite ends being forced toward one another.

Claims (63)

1. A controller for being used as a portion of a transdermal drug delivery apparatus including a receptacle and a reservoir, the controller comprising:

a housing configured for moving relative to the receptacle;

a pushing mechanism mounted to move relative to the housing and configured for pushing against the reservoir;

a force provider positioned between the housing and the pushing mechanism configured for moving the pushing mechanism relative to the housing; and

a latching mechanism configured for selectively restricting and allowing relative movement between the housing and the pushing mechanism, the latching mechanism comprising flexible arms extending between opposite ends of the latching mechanism, the latching mechanism being configured for allowing relative movement between the housing and the pushing mechanism in response to relative movement between the housing and the receptacle, the latching mechanism further being configured so that the arms release the pushing mechanism in response to the opposite ends being forced toward one another.

2. The controller according to claim 1 , wherein housing comprises a pushbutton.

3. The controller according to claim 1 , wherein the pushing mechanism comprises a plunger.

4. The controller according to claim 1 , wherein the force provider comprises at least one spring.

5. The controller according to claim 1 , wherein:

the pushing mechanism includes a shoulder;

the latching mechanism comprises

a locking member configured for engaging the shoulder for restricting relative movement between the pushing mechanism and the housing, and

an actuator for being engaged by the receptacle; and

the locking member and the actuator are cooperatively configured so that the locking member disengages from the shoulder for allowing relative movement between the pushing mechanism and the housing in response to the actuator being engaged by the receptacle.

6. The controller according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one flexible, resilient latch extending outwardly relative to the housing for connecting the controller to at least one of the reservoir and the receptacle.

7. The controller according to claim 1 in combination with the reservoir, wherein the controller and the reservoir are connected to one another by way of at least one snap-fit connector comprising a flexible, resilient latch.

8. The controller according to claim 1 in combination with the reservoir, wherein:

the reservoir is for containing fluid for being delivered by the transdermal drug delivery apparatus;

the controller is connected to reservoir; and

the pushing mechanism is for moving relative to the housing to compress at least a portion of the reservoir.

9. The controller according to claim 1 in combination with the receptacle, wherein the receptacle includes opposite surfaces for engaging and forcing the opposite ends of the latching mechanism toward one another in response to the controller being pushed at least farther into the receptacle.

10. A controller for being used as a portion of a transdermal drug delivery apparatus including a receptacle and a reservoir, the controller comprising:

a housing configured for moving relative to the receptacle;

a pushing mechanism mounted to move relative to the housing and configured for pushing against the reservoir;

a force provider positioned between the housing and the pushing mechanism configured for moving the pushing mechanism relative to the housing; and

a latching mechanism configured for selectively restricting and allowing relative movement between the housing and the pushing mechanism, the latching mechanism being configured for allowing relative movement between the housing and the pushing mechanism in response to relative movement between the housing and the receptacle,

and wherein the housing comprises:

a terminal portion; and

at least one wall extending from the terminal portion and at least partially around the pushing mechanism and the force provider.

11. The controller according to claim 10 , wherein the housing comprises a pushbutton and the terminal portion is a button plate.

12. The controller according to claim 10 , wherein:

the housing further comprises a guide extending from the terminal portion; and

each of the at least one wall, the pushing mechanism, the force provider and the latching mechanism extends at least partially around the guide.

13. The controller according to claim 10 , wherein:

the at least one wall defines at least one hole, and

an actuator of the latching mechanism extends at least partially into the hole.

14. The controller according to claim 10 , wherein:

the at least one wall defines at least a pair of holes that are spaced apart from one another around the at least one wall, and

actuators of the latching mechanism respectively extend at least partially into the holes.

15. A controller for being used as a portion of a transdermal drug delivery apparatus, the controller comprising:

a pushbutton for being pushed, the pushbutton comprising a terminal portion and at least one wall extending from the terminal portion and at least partially around an interior space;

a latching mechanism carried by the pushbutton and configured for being opened in response to the pushbutton being pushed;

a pushing mechanism carried by the pushbutton and configured for being released in response to the latching mechanism being opened; and

a force provider configured for moving the pushing mechanism relative to the pushbutton in response to the pushing mechanism being released,

wherein the latching mechanism is at least partially positioned in the interior space, the pushing mechanism is at least partially positioned in the interior space, and the force provider is at least partially positioned in the interior space.

16. The controller according to claim 15 , further comprising at least one flexible, resilient latch extending outwardly relative to a housing for connecting the controller to at least one of a reservoir and a receptacle of the transdermal drug delivery apparatus.

17. The controller according to claim 15 , wherein the pushing mechanism comprises a plunger.

18. The controller according to claim 15 , wherein the force provider comprises at least one spring.

19. The controller according to claim 15 , in combination with a reservoir, wherein:

the reservoir is for containing fluid for being delivered by the transdermal drug delivery apparatus; the controller is connected to reservoir; and

the pushing mechanism is for moving relative to the pushbutton to compress at least a portion of the reservoir.

20. A controller for being used as a portion of a transdermal drug delivery apparatus, the controller comprising:

a housing;
