Abstract

A receptacle, which may be suitable for use as a portion of a transdermal drug delivery apparatus, may include a housing for being fastened to the user, a force provider that is elastic, at least one deformable component, and a microneedle assembly movably mounted to the housing for moving inwardly and outwardly relative to the housing. The force provider may be positioned between the housing and the microneedle assembly for forcing the microneedle assembly outwardly relative to the housing and against the skin of the user. The at least one deformable component may be connected between the microneedle assembly and the housing for both allowing relative movement between the microneedle assembly and the housing, and at least partially restricting the microneedle assembly from falling away from the housing. An arresting member may be positioned between the housing and the microneedle assembly for restricting any movement of at least tips of microneedles of the microneedle assembly into an interior of the housing.

Claims (64)

1. A receptacle for being used as a portion of a transdermal drug delivery apparatus for being engaged to skin of a user and supplying fluid, the receptacle comprising:

a housing for being fastened to the user;

a force provider that is elastic;

at least one deformable component; and

a microneedle assembly movably mounted to the housing for moving inwardly and outwardly relative to the housing, wherein the microneedle assembly being movably mounted to the housing is comprised of

the force provider being positioned between the housing and the microneedle assembly for forcing the microneedle assembly outwardly relative to the housing and against the skin of the user, and

the at least one deformable component being connected between the microneedle assembly and the housing for both

allowing relative movement between the microneedle assembly and the housing, and

at least partially restricting the microneedle assembly from falling away from the housing.

2. The receptacle according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one arresting member positioned between the housing and the microneedle assembly for restricting any movement of at least tips of microneedles of the microneedle assembly into an interior of the housing.

3. The receptacle according to claim 2 , wherein the at least one arresting member is connected to and extends outwardly relative to the microneedle assembly for engaging an interior surface of the housing for restricting any movement of at least the tips of the microneedles into the interior of the housing.

4. The receptacle according to claim 3 , wherein the at least one arresting member comprises a plurality of lobes, and the lobes are serially arranged around the microneedle assembly.

5. The receptacle according to claim 1 , wherein the force provider comprises a spring positioned between the housing and the microneedle assembly for urging the microneedle assembly outwardly relative to the housing.

6. The receptacle according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one deformable component comprises a membrane connected between the microneedle assembly and the housing.

7. The receptacle according to claim 6 , wherein the membrane is an adhesive membrane.

8. The receptacle according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a chamber at least partially defined between a backside of the microneedle assembly and a backing structure, for supplying fluid to needles of the microneedle assembly; and

a cannula mounted to the backing structure and in fluid communication with the chamber.

9. The receptacle according to claim 1 , wherein the receptacle further comprises:

a support, wherein the microneedle assembly being mounted to the housing for allowing relative movement between the microneedle assembly and the housing is comprised of

the microneedle assembly being mounted to the housing by way of the support, and

the support being mounted to the housing for being moved relative to the housing, comprising the at least one deformable component being connected between the support and the housing;

a chamber positioned between the microneedle assembly and at least a portion of the support, for supplying fluid to needles of the microneedle assembly; and

a cannula mounted to the support and in fluid communication with the chamber.

10. The receptacle according to claim 1 , further comprising a support assembly, wherein:

the microneedle assembly is substantially fixedly connected to the support assembly for moving with the support assembly, comprising

an outer peripheral edge of a frame of the support assembly being mounted to a backing structure of the support assembly, and

the microneedle assembly being held between the frame and the backing structure; and

the microneedle assembly being movably mounted to the housing is comprised of the support assembly being movably connected to the housing by way of at least the force provider and the at least one deformable component.

11. The receptacle according to claim 10 , wherein the outer peripheral edge of the frame is positioned in a channel of the backing structure.

12. The receptacle according to claim 1 , wherein:

the housing comprises

an outer body extending at least partially around an interior space, and

an inner body mounted to the outer body and at least partially positioned in the interior space around which the outer body at least partially extends, the inner body extending at least partially around another interior space;

the receptacle further comprises a support assembly at least partially positioned in the interior space around which the inner body at least partially extends, wherein the microneedle assembly is mounted to the support assembly for moving with the support assembly; and

the microneedle assembly being mounted to the housing for being moved relative to the housing is comprised of the support assembly being mounted to the housing for being moved relative to the housing, comprising the at least one deformable component being connected between the support assembly and the housing.

13. The receptacle according to claim 12 , wherein:

the outer body comprises flexible material; and

the inner body comprises material that has a lower bending modulus than the material of the outer body.

14. The receptacle according to claim 12 , wherein:

the support assembly comprises a support structure comprised of a frame and a backing structure; and

the microneedle assembly is positioned between the frame and the backing structure for moving with the frame and the backing structure.

15. The receptacle according to claim 14 , further comprising:

a chamber at least partially defined between a backside of the microneedle assembly and the backing structure, for supplying fluid to needles of the microneedle assembly; and

a cannula mounted to the backing structure and in fluid communication with the chamber.

16. A receptacle for being used as a portion of a transdermal drug delivery apparatus, the receptacle comprising:

a housing;

a support structure movably positioned in the housing, the support structure comprising opposite ends and inwardly oriented connector parts for connecting to another portion of the apparatus, the connector parts being proximate the first end of the support structure;

a microneedle assembly mounted to the support structure for moving with the support structure relative to the housing, the microneedle assembly being proximate the second end of the support structure; and

a membrane connected between the support structure and the housing for restricting relative movement between the housing and the support structure.

17. The receptacle according to claim 16 , wherein:

the support structure comprises a sleeve having a sidewall; and

the connector parts are snap-fit connector parts comprising a series of spaced apart, flexible tabs extending radially inwardly from the sidewall of the sleeve.
