Abstract

Various drill bits, drilling systems and related methods are provided. In one embodiment, a drill bit comprises a bit body having a face and a shank, at least one insert having a convex engagement surface coupled with the face and at least one wear insert coupled with the shank. In one particular embodiment, the at least one wear insert may be positioned immediately adjacent a coupling end of the shank. The at least one wear insert may include a superabrasive table which may be bonded with a substrate. The at least one wear insert includes a wear surface defined in the superabrasive table. In one embodiment, the superabrasive table may comprise polycrystalline diamond. Similarly, the inset having a convex engagement surface may include a superabrasive material, such as polycrystalline diamond, bonded with a substrate. Such a drill bit may be used, for example, in a top hammer percussion drilling operation.

Claims (32)

1. A drill bit comprising:

a bit body having a drill head including a face exhibiting a diameter of between 1 inch and 3 inches, and the bit body further including a shank, the bit body being formed as a single, unitary volume of a first material, the face exhibiting a first radius, the shank exhibiting a second radius that is smaller than the first radius;

at least one insert having a convex engagement surface coupled to the face;

at least one wear insert coupled with the shank, the at least one wear insert being disposed within a pocket formed within the shank, the at least one wear insert being formed of a second material, different from the first material, wherein a wear surface of the at least one wear insert extends radially beyond an immediately adjacent surface of the shank and wherein an outer diameter of the drill head is radially beyond the wear surface.

2. The drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one wear insert is immediately adjacent a coupling end of the shank.

3. The drill bit of claim 2 , wherein the at least one wear insert includes a superabrasive material, hardfacing, or a cemented carbide material.

4. The drill bit of claim 3 , wherein the at least one wear insert includes a wear surface defined in the superabrasive table.

5. The drill bit of claim 3 , wherein the superabrasive material comprises polycrystalline diamond.

6. The drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one wear insert exhibits a thickness of less than 0.25 inch.

7. The drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one wear insert is substantially elongated with its length oriented substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the drill bit.

8. The drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one wear insert includes at least three wear inserts substantially equally spaced about a circumference of the shank.

9. The drill bit of claim 1 , further comprising at least one additional wear insert positioned in an end face of the shank, opposite the face of the bit body.

10. The drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the drill bit body includes a plurality of gage portions and a plurality of flutes arranged in an alternating pattern and a skirt portion extending from the face and tapering down to the shank, wherein the drill bit further includes at least one additional wear insert positioned in the skirt portion adjacent a gage portion of the plurality of gage portions.

11. The drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one insert having a convex engagement surface comprises polycrystalline diamond.

12. A drilling system comprising:

a drill bit comprising:

a unitary bit body having a drill head with a face, the bit body also having a shank, the shank exhibiting a radius from a longitudinal axis of the bit body;

an internal engagement surface formed within the shank;

at least one insert having a convex engagement surface coupled with the face;

at least one wear insert coupled with the shank and having a wear surface radially positioned from the longitudinal axis a distance which is the sum of the radius and 0.10 inch or less, wherein an outer diameter of the drill head is radially beyond the wear surface;

a drive rod having a surface configured to engage the internal engagement surface of the shank.

13. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a flow passage formed in the bit body including an outlet formed in the face.

14. The system of claim 13 , further comprising a channel formed in the drive rod in communication with the flow passage.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one wear insert is adjacent a coupling end of the shank.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one wear insert includes a superabrasive material, hardfacing, or a cemented carbide material.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the superabrasive material comprises polycrystalline diamond.

18. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one wear insert includes at least three wear inserts substantially equally spaced about a circumference of the shank.

19. The system of claim 12 , further comprising at least one additional wear insert positioned in an end face of the shank, opposite the face of the bit body.

20. The system of claim 12 , wherein the drill bit body includes a plurality of gage portions and a plurality of flutes arranged in an alternating pattern and a skirt portion extending from the face and tapering down to the shank, wherein the drill bit further includes at least one additional wear insert positioned in the skirt portion at a location that is tapering toward the shank and adjacent a gage portion of the plurality of gage portions.

21. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one insert having a convex engagement surface comprises polycrystalline diamond.

22. The system of claim 12 , wherein the internal engagement surface includes a tapered surface.

23. The system of claim 12 , wherein the internal engagement surface includes a threaded surface.
