Abstract

The present invention provides improved methods, facilities and systems for parallel processing of biological cellular samples in an efficient and scalable manner. The invention enables parallel processing of biological cellular samples, such as patient samples, in a space and time efficient fashion. The methods, facilities and systems of the invention find particular utility in processing patient samples for use in cell therapy.

Claims (18)

1. A method for parallel processing of a plurality of biological cellular samples comprising:

i) transferring a plurality of cellular samples (S 1 to Sn) to a first processing unit (U 1 ) containing a plurality of identical processing stations (P 1 / 1 to P 1 / n );

ii) processing each of said cellular samples (S 1 to Sn) on a processing station (P 1 / 1 to P 1 / n ) to produce a plurality of processed cellular samples (S 1 / 1 to Sn/ 1 );

iii) transferring said processed cellular samples (S 1 / 1 to Sn/ 1 ) to a second processing unit (U 2 ) containing a plurality of identical processing stations (P 2 / 1 to P 2 / n );

iv) processing each of said cellular samples (S 1 / 1 to Sn/ 1 ) on a processing station (P 2 / 1 to P 2 / n ) to produce a plurality of processed cellular samples (S 1 / 2 to Sn/ 2 ); and

v) transferring to and further processing said plurality of processed cellular samples on one or more processing units (UN) to produce a plurality of processed cellular samples (S 1 /N to Sn/N), wherein steps (i)-(v) occur in a single cell processing facility for parallel processing of a plurality of biological cellular samples.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein each of said cellular samples (S 1 to Sn) is uniquely identifiable.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein each of the cellular samples (S 1 to Sn) is enclosed in container, which container is uniquely identifiable.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein each of the cellular samples comprises human cells.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the cellular samples are selected from the group consisting of blood samples, tissue aspirates, tissue biopsies, bone marrow, adipose tissue and umbilical cord blood.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the cellular samples are derived from one or more patients.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the processing of the cellular samples involves one or more processes selected from the group consisting of cell isolation, cell concentration, cell culture, cell expansion, cell transduction and cell formulation.

8. The method according to claim 1 , additionally comprising the step of storing the processed cellular samples (S 1 /N to Sn/N) in a cell bank.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said method is an automated method.

10. The method according to claim 1 , additionally comprising the step of administering one or more of the processed cellular samples (S 1 /N to Sn/N) to one or more patients.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein each of said one or more patients is the original donor of his or her cellular samples (S 1 to Sn).

12. The method according to claim 10 , wherein said one or more patients are not the original donors of the cellular samples (S 1 to Sn).

13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein said patient is a cancer patient.
