Abstract

Examples for a traction system are provided. In one example, the traction system includes a nozzle coupled to an air source and configured to be selectively aimed toward a determined portion of a rail surface of a rail, and a conduit configured to supply pressurized air from the air source to the nozzle, the nozzle flexibly coupled thereto. The nozzle is configured for the aim of the nozzle to be controlled to change its aiming direction in response to a change in curvature of the rail, whereby a stream of air from the nozzle impacts the determined portion during movement of the vehicle through the curvature of the rail.

Claims (33)

1. A system for a vehicle, comprising:

a passage configured to receive pressurized air and coupled to a support of a lead axle of the vehicle;

a nozzle coupled to the passage and configured to direct the pressurized air to a surface over which the vehicle is traveling; and

a tracking mechanism to adjust one or more of a position of the nozzle or an angle of the nozzle relative to the support as a relative direction of travel between the vehicle and the surface changes;

wherein the tracking mechanism comprises a lever bracket coupled to the passage at a first end and to a frame of the vehicle at a second end, and

wherein the frame of the vehicle is configured to move laterally with respect to the support as the relative direction of travel between the vehicle and the surface changes, and wherein the lever bracket is configured to transfer the lateral movement to the passage in order to adjust the one or more of the position or the angle of the nozzle.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the lever bracket extends horizontally relative to the frame, and wherein the support comprises a journal bearing housing.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the lever bracket extends vertically relative to the frame.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the lever bracket is coupled to the support by a bellows.

5. A system for a vehicle, comprising:

a passage configured to receive pressurized air and coupled to a support of a lead axle of the vehicle;

a nozzle coupled to the passage and configured to direct the pressurized air to a surface over which the vehicle is traveling; and

a tracking mechanism to adjust one or more of a position of the nozzle or an angle of the nozzle relative to the support as a relative direction of travel between the vehicle and the surface changes;

wherein the passage is comprised of a flexible material and wherein the tracking mechanism comprises an electromagnet coupled to the nozzle, the electromagnet configured to be energized when the surface changes direction to move the nozzle and flexible passage in order to adjust one or more of the position or the angle of the nozzle.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the electromagnet is annular and surrounds an opening of the nozzle.

7. A method for a vehicle, comprising:

with a passage coupled to a support of a lead axle of the vehicle, receiving pressurized air;

with a nozzle coupled to the passage, directing the pressurized air to a surface over which the vehicle is traveling; and

with a tracking mechanism, adjusting one or more of a position of the nozzle or an angle of the nozzle relative to the support as a relative direction of travel between the vehicle and the surface changes;

wherein the passage is comprised of a flexible material, wherein the tracking mechanism comprises an electromagnet coupled to the nozzle, and wherein adjusting the one or more of the position of the nozzle or the angle of the nozzle comprises energizing the electromagnet when the surface changes direction to move the nozzle and flexible passage.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the tracking mechanism comprises a lever bracket coupled to the passage at a first end and to a frame of the vehicle at a second end.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein adjusting the one or more of the position of the nozzle or the angle of the nozzle comprises:

with the frame of the vehicle, moving laterally with respect to the support as the relative direction of travel between the vehicle and the surface changes; and

with the lever bracket, transferring the lateral movement to the passage.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the lever bracket extends horizontally relative to the frame, and wherein the support comprises a journal bearing housing.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the lever bracket extends vertically relative to the frame.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the electromagnet is annular and surrounds an opening of the nozzle.

13. A system for a vehicle, comprising:

a frame, a support attached to the frame, a lead axle supported by the support, and two wheels attached to the lead axle, the lead axle and attached wheels configured to shift laterally relative to the frame as a relative direction of travel between the vehicle and a surface over which the vehicle is traveling changes;

a passage configured to receive pressurized air and coupled to the support;

a nozzle coupled to the passage and configured to direct the pressurized air to the surface; and

a tracking mechanism configured to adjust one or more of a position of the nozzle or an angle of the nozzle relative to the support as the relative direction of travel between the vehicle and the surface changes;

wherein the tracking mechanism comprises a lever bracket coupled to the support and to at least one of the passage or the nozzle, and the lever bracket is further coupled to the frame such that lateral shifting of the axle and wheels relative to the frame as the relative direction of travel between the vehicle and the surface changes causes the lever bracket to move with respect to the support, in order to adjust the one or more of the position or the angle of the nozzle.
