Abstract

Methods and products to deliver at least a portion of an advertisement to a viewer at normal playback speeds after receiving a command from the viewer to fast-forward through an advertisement faster than normal playback speeds is described. In certain embodiments, the invention delivers a portion of the advertisement to be played at normal playback speeds to the viewer: and delivers the remaining portion of the advertisement to be played at a playback speed that is faster than the specified playback speed so that the combination of the portions delivered at normal and faster playback speeds is delivered to the user at the specified playback speed. In some other embodiments, the invention delivers at least a portion of the first advertisement to the viewer at normal playback speeds; and delivers one or more other advertisements to the viewer simultaneously with the first advertisement with the audio information muted based on the specified playback speed.

Claims (37)

1. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing computer-readable instructions that, when executed by a processor of a computing device, cause the computing device to perform operations comprising:

detecting, in a content stream being played back at a first playback speed, information indicating a start of a segment associated with an advertisement and indicating a time duration of the segment;

sending, to a display device, a first portion of the segment to be played back at the first playback speed;

receiving, from an input device, a command to fast-forward or rewind to enable playback at a second playback speed that is faster than the first playback speed; and

sending, to the display device, a second portion of the segment to be played back at a third playback speed that is faster than the second playback speed to enable playback of the first portion and the second portion during the time duration.

2. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the first portion comprises a portion of the advertisement.

3. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the first portion comprises a portion of a plurality of advertisements that are each played back simultaneously.

4. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the first portion comprises a plurality of versions of an advertisement played back simultaneously.

5. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the first portion comprises audio with a first pitch and the second portion comprises audio with a second pitch.

6. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the segment comprises parameters indicating the length of the first portion and a display setting for the first portion.

7. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , further comprising computer-readable instructions that, when executed by the processor of the computing device, cause the computing device to perform further operations comprising:

sending, to a display device, a list of advertisements that are selectable for play back during the first portion.

8. A method performed by one or more computing devices, the method comprising:

detecting, in a content stream being played back at a first playback speed, information indicating a start of a segment associated with an advertisement and indicating a time duration of the segment;

sending, to a display device, a first portion of the segment to be played back at the first playback speed;

receiving, from an input device, a command to fast-forward or rewind to enable playback at a second playback speed that is faster than the first playback speed; and

sending, to the display device, a second portion of the segment to be played back at a third playback speed that is faster than the second playback speed to enable playback of the first portion and the second portion during the time duration.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first portion comprises a portion of the advertisement.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first portion comprises a portion of a plurality of advertisements that are each played back simultaneously.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first portion comprises a plurality of versions of an advertisement played back simultaneously.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first portion comprises audio with a first pitch and the second portion comprises audio with a second pitch.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the segment comprises parameters indicating the length of the first portion and a display setting for the first portion.

14. The method of claim 8 further comprising:

sending, to a display device, a list of advertisements that are selectable for play back during the first portion.

15. A computing device comprising:

one or more processors; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the device to:

detect, in a content stream being played back at a first playback speed, information indicating a start of a segment associated with an advertisement and indicating a time duration of the segment;

send, to a display device, a first portion of the segment to be played back at the first playback speed;

receive, from an input device, a command to fast-forward or rewind to enable playback at a second playback speed that is faster than the first playback speed; and

send, to the display device, a second portion of the segment to be played back at a third playback speed that is faster than the second playback speed to enable playback of the first portion and the second portion during the time duration.

16. The computing device of claim 15 , wherein the first portion comprises a portion of the advertisement.

17. The computing device of claim 15 , wherein the first portion comprises a portion of a plurality of advertisements that are each played back simultaneously.

18. The computing device of claim 15 , wherein the first portion comprises audio with a first pitch and the second portion comprises audio with a second pitch.

19. The computing device of claim 15 , wherein the segment comprises parameters indicating the length of the first portion and a display setting for the first portion.

20. The computing device of claim 15 wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the computing device to:

send, to a display device, a list of advertisements that are selectable for play back during the first portion.
