Infant calming/sleep-aid, SIDS prevention device, and method of use
An infant calming/sleep-aid/SIDS detection device is provided that includes a main moving platform that moves in a variable manner with accompanying variable sound generation, the sound and motion adapted to calm a fussy baby, induce sleep, and maintain sleep under normal conditions. The device may also have a sensor for detection of pauses in breathing and/or detection of resultant biological changes related to breathing pauses and respond with appropriate stimuli to arouse the baby and allow breathing to recommence.
1. A device comprising:
a movable platform for supporting an infant, the platform configured to pivot on an axis normal to a major plane of the platform to impart an oscillating rotational motion to the platform;
a sensor that generates a signal corresponding to a motor status or a physiologic status of the infant when supported by the platform; and
a control system that receives and analyzes the generated signal of the status or the physiologic status of the infant and determines if the infant is distressed, wherein the control system generates at least one control output that controls the oscillating rotational motion of the platform if the control system determines that the infant is distressed.
2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the control system determines the infant is distressed by determining whether a motor or physiologic perturbation greater than an acceptable baseline has occurred.
3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the control system determines that the infant is distressed by determining that a pause in breathing greater than a predetermined duration has occurred.
4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the control system determines that the infant is distressed by detecting if a heart rate of the infant falls below a predetermined threshold.
5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one control output cause an alarm directed to caregivers to be generated.
6. The device of claim 1 , wherein an emergency call is initiated in response to the at least one control output.
7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one control output cause the platform to move in the oscillating rotational motion and a loud sound to be generated.
8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the oscillating rotational motion of the platform has a frequency that is greater than 0.5 Hz.
9. The device of claim 7 , wherein the sound has an intensity of at least 65 dB.
10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the control system determines that the infant is distressed by detecting if an oxygen level of the infant falls below a predetermined threshold.
11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one control output cause initiation of the oscillating rotational motion.
12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the oscillating rotational motion has a frequency of between 0.5 Hz and 1.5 Hz.
13. The device of claim 12 , wherein the oscillating rotational motion has an amplitude between 0.5 inches to 2.5 inches taken at a location corresponding to a center of a head of the infant when supported on the platform.
14. The device of claim 1 , wherein the oscillating rotational motion has a substantially square waveform.
15. The device of claim 1 , wherein the oscillating rotational motion has a frequency of between 2 Hz and 4.5 Hz.
16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the oscillating rotational motion has a substantially square waveform.
17. The device of claim 16 , wherein the oscillating rotational motion has an amplitude between about 0.2 inches and about 1.3 inches taken at a location corresponding to a center of a head of the infant when supported on the platform.
18. The device of claim 1 , wherein the oscillating rotational motion of the platform is within a horizontal plane of the platform.
19. The device of claim 1 , wherein the axis normal to the major plane of the platform intersects the infant when supported on the platform.
20. A device comprising:
a control system operable to control operations of the device;
a movable platform for supporting an infant, wherein the control system is operable to cause the platform to pivot on an axis normal to a major plane of the platform to impart an oscillating rotational motion to the platform; and
a sensor operable to generate a signal corresponding to a physiologic status of the infant when supported by the platform,
wherein the control system is configured to receive and analyze the generated signal and determine if the infant is distressed, and wherein, if the control system determines that the infant is distressed, the control system generates at least one control output that controls an operation of the device to respond to the distress.
21. The device of claim 20 , wherein the control system determines the infant is distressed by one or more of:
determining whether a motor or physiologic perturbation greater than an acceptable baseline has occurred,
determining that a pause in breathing greater than a predetermined duration has occurred,
detecting if an oxygen level of the infant falls below a predetermined threshold, or
detecting if a heart rate of the infant falls below a predetermined threshold.
22. The device of claim 20 , wherein the at least one control output cause the platform to move in the oscillating rotational motion and a loud sound to be generated.
23. The device of claim 22 , wherein the sound has an intensity of at least 65 dB.
24. The device of claim 20 , wherein the at least one control output cause initiation of the oscillating rotational motion of the platform.
25. The device of claim 20 , wherein the at least one control output cause oscillating rotational motion of the platform having a frequency of between 0.5 Hz and 1.5 Hz.
26. The device of claim 25 , wherein the oscillating rotational motion has an amplitude between 0.5 inches to 2.5 inches taken at a location corresponding to a center of a head of the infant when supported on the platform.
27. The device of claim 20 , wherein the at least one control output cause oscillating rotational motion of the platform having a substantially square waveform.
28. The device of claim 20 , wherein the at least one control output cause oscillating rotational motion of the platform having a frequency of between 2 Hz and 4.5 Hz.
29. The device of claim 28 , wherein the oscillating rotational motion has a substantially square waveform.
30. The device of claim 29 , wherein the oscillating rotational motion has an amplitude between about 0.2 inches and about 1.3 inches taken at a location corresponding to a center of a head of the infant when supported on the platform.
31. The device of claim 20 , wherein the oscillating rotational motion of the platform is within a horizontal plane of the platform.
32. The device of claim 20 , wherein the axis normal to the major plane of the platform intersects the infant when positioned on the platform.
