Abstract

A bottle for holding liquids that is biodegradable and that is made from environmentally sustainable materials. The bottle includes a body, a shoulder, a neck portion, and a cap. According to one aspect, the neck portion of the bottle is made of bioplastic, and the shoulder and body of the bottle are made from thermoformed pulp. The bioplastic neck can mate with, and be adhered to, the shoulder, and the shoulder can mate with, and be adhered to, the pulp body.

Claims (27)

1. A method of manufacturing a container for liquids, comprising:

thermoforming a pulp body having an inner surface and an outer surface;

injection molding a unitary bioplastic top having an inner surface, an outer surface, a shoulder portion and a neck portion, wherein the shoulder portion comprises a ridge along the outer surface of the bioplastic top;

mating the pulp body with the bioplastic top such that an upper periphery of the pulp body resides over at least a portion of the shoulder portion below the ridge along the outer surface of the bioplastic top; and

bonding the pulp body to the bioplastic top.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bonding comprises at least one of:

applying an adhesive between at least a portion of the inner surface of the pulp body and at least a portion of the outer surface of the bioplastic top; and

forming a heat seal between at least a portion of the inner surface of the pulp body and at least a portion of the outer surface of the bioplastic top.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the adhesive is a polymer that is not soluble in water, is biodegradable, and/or is repulpable.

4. A liquid containing apparatus, comprising:

a pulp body; and

a bioplastic top formed from one piece of bioplastic comprising a shoulder portion conjoined with a neck portion;

wherein the bioplastic top mates with the pulp body and is directly bonded to the pulp body;

wherein the bioplastic top comprises an outer surface and an inner surface and the pulp body comprises an outer surface and an inner surface;

wherein the shoulder portion comprises a ridge along the outer surface of the bioplastic top, wherein an upper periphery of the pulp body resides over at least a portion of the shoulder portion below the ridge along the outer surface of the bioplastic top.

5. The liquid containing apparatus of claim 4 , wherein a top edge of the pulp body abuts against the ridge so that an exterior of the liquid containing apparatus about the ridge is smooth.

6. The liquid containing apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the bioplastic top is directly bonded to the pulp body by way of a heat seal formed between at least a portion of the outer surface of the bioplastic top and at least a portion of the inner surface of the pulp body.

7. The liquid containing apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the bioplastic top is directly bonded to the pulp body by way of an adhesive applied between at least a portion of the outer surface of the bioplastic top and at least a portion of the inner surface of the pulp body.

8. The liquid containing apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the adhesive is a polymer that is not soluble in water, is biodegradable, and/or is repulpable.

9. The liquid containing apparatus of claim 4 , further comprising a label applied at least over a portion of the bioplastic top and a portion of the pulp body where the bioplastic top and the pulp body are bonded together.

10. The liquid containing apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the label is applied around a complete circumference of the liquid containing apparatus.

11. The liquid containing apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the pulp body includes one or more vertical strengthening creases.

12. The liquid containing apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the pulp body further comprises one or more vertical strengthening ribs.

13. The liquid containing apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the shoulder portion further comprises one or more radial strengthening creases.

14. The liquid containing apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the pulp body further comprises an interior sealing coating.

15. The liquid containing apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the interior sealing coating is formed from a polyvinyl alcohol polymer.

16. The liquid containing apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the interior sealing coating is formed from a bioplastic.
