Abstract

A shoulder immobilizer ( 20 ) includes a semi-rigid or rigid orthosis, in the form of an arm support ( 22 ), which supports the upper arm, elbow, forearm and wrist of a patient. A bolster ( 24 ) is positioned between the patient and the arm support ( 22 ). A body strap ( 26 ) extends around the patient and attaches to the arm support ( 22 ) and/or the bolster ( 24 ), holding the arm support and bolster in position against the body of the patient. In embodiments, the shoulder immobilizer ( 20 ) may utilize a shoulder strap ( 28 ), but such a shoulder strap is not necessary for shoulder immobilization of the patient.

Claims (29)

1. A fracture stabilization device, comprising:

an arm support, comprising:

a rigid or semi-rigid lower forearm support extending outward when the fracture stabilization device is worn by a patient, the lower forearm support comprising a receiving surface configured to receive a forearm of the patient and support the forearm;

a rigid or semi-rigid upper arm support configured to extend along a back portion of an arm of the patient when worn by the patient;

a compression plate; and

a strap configured to hold the compression plate against a first portion of the arm of the patient, the compression plate thereby configured to apply a compressive force to the arm, wherein the upper arm support is configured to support a second portion of the arm of the patient opposite the first portion of the arm of the patient and wherein the upper arm support is configured to be supported in a fixed position against the body of the patient; and

an expandable bolster directly removably attached to the lower forearm support, the expandable bolster comprising:

cushioned outer surfaces, and

an expandable section disposed between the cushioned outer surfaces and configured to adjust a desired spacing between the cushioned outer surfaces such that an angle of orientation between the cushioned outer surfaces remains unchanged as the desired spacing between the cushioned outer surfaces is adjusted;

wherein the rigid or semi-rigid lower forearm support and the rigid or semi-rigid upper arm support are locked in place during use to provide a fixed position for an elbow of the patient.

2. The fracture stabilization device of claim 1 , wherein the compression plate is configured to conform to fit over a shoulder of the patient.

3. The fracture stabilization device of claim 1 , wherein the compression plate is configured to conform to fit over a forearm of the patient.

4. The fracture stabilization device of claim 1 , wherein the compression plate is configured to conform to fit over a wrist of the patient.

5. The fracture stabilization device of claim 1 , wherein the compression plate is configured to conform to fit over an upper arm of the patient.

6. The fracture stabilization device of claim 1 , wherein the compression plate is configured to conform to fit over a wrist and a thumb of the patient.

7. The fracture stabilization device of claim 1 , wherein the strap is configured to removably attach the compression plate to the upper arm support.

8. The fracture stabilization device of claim 1 , wherein the compression plate and the upper arm support are configured to substantially encapsulate a portion of the arm.

9. The fracture stabilization device of claim 1 , wherein the strap is configured to extend around a shoulder of the patient opposite the arm.

10. The fracture stabilization device of claim 1 , wherein the compression plate is a first compression plate and the device further comprises a second compression plate.

11. The fracture stabilization device of claim 10 , further comprising a second strap configured to hold the second compression plate against the arm, thereby being configured for applying a compressive force to the arm.

12. The fracture stabilization device of claim 11 , wherein the second strap is configured to removably attach the second compression plate to the upper arm support independent of the first compression plate.

13. The fracture stabilization device of claim 12 , wherein the second compression plate is configured to apply a compressive force to a different portion of the arm than the first compression plate.

14. The fracture stabilization device of claim 1 , further comprising a cold therapy system configured to conform to a portion of the arm.

15. The fracture stabilization device of claim 14 , wherein the cold therapy system is positionable over an exterior surface of the compression plate.

16. The fracture stabilization device of claim 14 , wherein the cold therapy system is configured to conform to a shoulder portion of the arm.

17. The fracture stabilization device of claim 16 , wherein the upper arm support comprises an opening on an anterior side of the upper arm support, and the cold therapy system comprises a tubing connector that is positionable at the opening.

18. The fracture stabilization device of claim 14 , wherein the cold therapy system comprises a butterfly cold therapy unit.

19. The fracture stabilization device of claim 18 , wherein the butterfly cold therapy unit comprises tabs configured to removably attach the butterfly cold therapy unit to the upper arm support.

20. The fracture stabilization device of claim 19 , wherein the tabs are configured to attach directly to the upper arm support.
