Abstract

Mechanisms are provided for allowing a mobile device to dynamically obtain program guide data. A mobile device having the capability of playing media streams is configurable to dynamically request program guide structure information followed by program guide content information. In one example, the program guide structure information allows a user to begin navigating the program guide data in an active and dynamic manner. Program guide content information including data such as program titles, times, icons, and links are then downloaded and displayed as needed. Potentially limitless amounts of program guide data can be provided on a mobile device. Program guide content information can be provided in a generic manner while allowing user layout customization. Program guide information can also be preemptively provided to a mobile device based on a variety of criteria.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the content information is program guide content information.

8. A system comprising:

processor; and

memory comprising instructions to cause the processor to execute a method, the method comprising:

sending content structure information to a mobile device, the content structure information comprising a guide structure, the guide structure configured to allow a user of the mobile device to navigate a guide; the content structure information provided without content information, the content information comprising content lineup, guide parts, and icons;

dynamically receiving a first content information request from a mobile device, the first content information request received at a server including a processor, the first content information corresponding to a first block of information, the first content information request comprising:

a subscription update request;

a first content lineup request;

a first guide part request; and

a first icon request;

updating a subscription associated with the mobile device, the updating the subscription comprising changing a number of channels associated with the mobile device;

dynamically sending a first content information response to the mobile device, the first content information response comprising:

first content line up data associated with the updated subscription;

first guide part data; and

first icon data, the first content line up data, the first guide part data, and the first icon data sent as a single response with the first content line up data, the first guide part data, and the first icon data configured to be assembled by the mobile device, along with the guide structure, to form a full guide;

receiving a second content information request from the mobile device, the second content information request triggered by navigation by the user through the first content information on the mobile device, the second content information corresponding to a second block of information, the second content information request comprising:

a second content lineup request;

a second guide part request; and

a second icon request;

sending a second content information response to the mobile device, the second content information response comprising:

second guide part data; and

second icon data, the first guide part data and the first icon data sent as a single response with the first guide part data and the first icon data configured to be assembled to form an updated guide;

determining usage patterns of user navigation through the first and second content information on the mobile device, the usage patterns including a direction in which a user typically scrolls, user viewing or listening patterns, and times when media is frequently accessed;

determining a group of channels frequently accessed by the user; and
