Abstract

The specification discloses a portable dialysis machine having a detachable controller unit and base unit. The controller unit includes a door having an interior face, a housing with a panel, where the housing and panel define a recessed region configured to receive the interior face of the door, and a manifold receiver fixedly attached to the panel. The base unit has a planar surface for receiving a container of fluid, a scale integrated with the planar surface, a heater in thermal communication with the planar surface, and a sodium sensor in electromagnetic communication with the planar surface. Embodiments of the disclosed portable dialysis system have improved structural and functional features, including improved modularity, ease of use, and safety features.

Claims (45)

1. A dialysis machine comprising:

a controller unit wherein the controller unit comprises:

a door having an interior face;

a housing with a panel wherein the housing and panel define a recessed region configured to receive the interior face of the door; and

a component receiver fixedly attached to the panel and configured to receive the molded plastic substrate; and

a transceiver configured to communicate data through a network, wherein the data comprises an identity of one or more disposable components installed in the dialysis machine; and

a reservoir unit in fluid communication with the controller unit, wherein the reservoir unit further comprises a member connected to an exterior of the reservoir unit and wherein the member is configured to physically receive the dialyzer.

2. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , wherein the component receiver comprises at least one of contoured guides, pins, or latches.

3. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of pumps, wherein the panel is configured to provide access to the plurality of pumps.

4. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , wherein the reservoir unit further comprises a planar surface and a scale integrated with the planar surface.

5. The dialysis machine of claim 4 , wherein the reservoir unit further comprises a heater in thermal communication with the planar surface.

6. The dialysis machine of claim 5 , further comprising a sodium sensor in electromagnetic communication with the planar surface.

7. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , wherein the dialysis machine comprises one or more disposable components and wherein the one or more disposable components comprises a sorbent cartridge.

8. The dialysis machine of claim 7 , wherein the controller further comprises a reader configured to acquire the data from the dialyzer or the one or more disposable components.

9. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , wherein the dialysis machine comprises one or more disposable components and wherein the data is stored in at least one of a barcode, a RFID tag, a EEPROM, or a microchip embedded in the one or more disposable components or the dialyzer.

10. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , wherein the dialysis machine comprises one or more disposable components and wherein flow paths in the one or more disposable components have a hydraulic diameter in a range of 1.5 mm to 7.22 mm.

11. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second flow paths has a hydraulic diameter in a range of 1.5 mm to 7.22 mm.

12. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , further comprising a sorbent cartridge, wherein the plurality of tubing is adapted to be removably attached to the sorbent cartridge.

13. A dialysis system comprising:

a molded plastic substrate defining a first flow path which is fluidically isolated from a second flow path, wherein the molded plastic substrate is bonded to a plurality of tubing and wherein the plurality of tubing is bonded to a dialyzer;

a controller unit wherein the controller unit comprises:

a door having an interior face;

a housing with a panel wherein the housing and panel define a recessed region configured to receive the interior face of the door;

a component receiver fixedly attached to the panel and configured to receive the molded plastic substrate;

one or more disposable components configured to attach to the controller unit; and

a transceiver configured to communicate data through a network, wherein the data comprises an identity of the one or more disposable components used in the dialysis system;

a reservoir unit in fluid communication with the controller unit, wherein the reservoir unit further comprises a member connected to an exterior of the reservoir unit and wherein the member is configured to physically receive the dialyzer; and
