Abstract

A water filter may include a diatomite-based ceramic filter having a median pore size greater than about 5 microns, and at least one of a halogen source, a UV source, an active carbon source, or a filtration membrane. A method of filtering water includes passing water from a source chamber through a diatomite-based ceramic filter having a median pore size greater than about 5 microns, and passing the water through at least one of a halogen source, an active carbon source, a UV source, or a filtration membrane to a collection chamber. The diatomite-based ceramic filter may further include bentonite. The water filter may include a biocide. The water filter may have a flow rate greater than about 5 L/hr when normalized to a surface area of 0.015 m 2 . The water filter may reduce bacteria by greater than about 6-log. The halogen source may include a halogen elution system or a surface modification of the diatomite-based ceramic filter.

Claims (28)

1 . A diatomite-based ceramic filter, said ceramic filter having:

a permeability of greater than about 0.5 Darcy;

an abrasion mass loss value of less than about 25 mg/cm2;

and wherein the diatomite-based ceramic filter reduces bacteria by greater than about 3-log.

2 . A water filter comprising:

a diatomite-based ceramic filter, said ceramic filter having:

a permeability of greater than about 0.5 Darcy;

an abrasion mass loss value of less than about 25 mg/cm2;

and wherein the diatomite-based ceramic filter reduces bacteria by greater than about 3-log.

3 . A method of filtering water, the method comprising:

passing water from a source chamber through a diatomite-based ceramic filter having:

a permeability of greater than about 0.5 Darcy;

an abrasion mass loss value of less than about 25 mg/cm2;

wherein the diatomite-based ceramic filter reduces bacteria by greater than about 3-log; and

passing the water to a collection chamber.

4 . A diatomite-based ceramic filter in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the median pore size of the diatomite-based ceramic filter is greater than about 5 microns.

5 . A diatomite-based ceramic filter in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the median pore size of the diatomite-based ceramic filter is greater than about 7 microns.

6 . A diatomite-based ceramic filter in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the diatomite-based ceramic filter is disc-shaped.

7 . A diatomite-based ceramic in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the diatomite-based ceramic filter is candle-shaped.

8 . A diatomite-based ceramic filter in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the diatomite-based ceramic filter further comprises bentonite.

9 . A diatomite-based ceramic filter in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising a biocide.

10 . A diatomite-based ceramic filter in accordance with claim 9 , wherein the biocide comprises at least one of germicides, bactericides, fungicides, algaecides, and drinking water disinfectants.

11 . A diatomite-based ceramic filter in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the flow rate of the diatomite-based ceramic filter is greater than about 5 L/hr when standardized to 19 cm of head pressure.

12 . A diatomite-based ceramic filter in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the flow rate of the diatomite-based ceramic filter is greater than about 10 L/hr when normalized to a surface area of 0.015 m 2 of the diatomite-based ceramic filter.

13 . A diatomite-based ceramic filter in accordance with any claim 1 , wherein the diatomite-based ceramic filter reduces bacteria by greater than about 3-log, but less than about 5-log.

14 . A diatomite-based ceramic filter in accordance with any claim 1 , wherein the diatomite-based ceramic filter reduces bacteria by greater than about 4-log.

15 . A diatomite-based ceramic filter, in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the diatomite-based ceramic filter includes active carbon.

16 . A diatomite-based ceramic filter in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the diatomite-based ceramic filter has a permeability of greater than about 1.0 Darcy.
