Abstract

A chassis rail stabilizer that may be used to securely support a rack mount rail in a server rack, in particular during transportation of the server rack. The chassis rail stabilizer includes a first body with a front face and a back face, and four rail supporting sides. The stabilizer further includes a second body extending off of the front face of the first body and an offset threaded through hole that extends through the first and second bodies. The offset nature of the through hole is such that the stabilizer may be secured to a vertical mounting post in a server rack in one of four orientations. Each orientation causes one of the rail supporting sides to extend downward a different distance to support a top surface of the rail beneath.

Claims (35)

1. A system for supporting equipment in a framing structure, the system comprising:

a server rack comprising a frame, the frame comprising at least two vertical mounting posts that extend from a top portion of the frame to a bottom portion of the frame, the at least two vertical mounting posts comprising vertically spaced through holes;

at least one rack mount rail comprising a rail and mounting hardware at a first end and a second end of the rail, the mounting hardware comprising rail engaging features that engage the vertically spaced through holes to transmit a weight of the at least one rack mount rail to the at least two vertical mounting posts, the at least one rack mount rail configured to support a rack mount chassis within the server rack; and

a rail stabilizer secured to a particular through hole of the vertically spaced through holes that is above and unobstructed by the mounting hardware, the rail stabilizer supporting a position of the mounting hardware relative to the at least two vertical mounting posts, the rail stabilizer comprising:

a first body comprising a first front face, a first back face opposite the first front face, and a first, a second, a third, and a fourth rail supporting surface that extends between the first front face and the first back face, and

an engaging feature configured to aid in engaging the first body to one of the at least two vertical mounting posts, wherein each of the first, second, third, and fourth rail supporting surfaces extends a different distance from the engaging feature,

wherein the first body is positionable relative to the particular through hole of the vertically spaced through holes in one of four rotatable positions such that one of the first, second, third, or fourth rail supporting surfaces faces towards a top surface of the mounting hardware.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the engaging feature is a through hole that extends from the first front face to the first back face, the through hole being asymmetrically offset from a center point of the first front face and the first back face.

3. The system of claim 2 , comprising a threaded member to secure the rail stabilizer to the particular through hole of the at least two vertical mounting posts.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising the rack mount chassis supported by the rack mount rail.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a spring cage configured to engage with the particular through hole and support the rail stabilizer in the one of four rotatable positions.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the engaging feature is a member extending from the first front face of the first body.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the rail stabilizer further comprises a second body extending from the first front face of the first body, the second body comprising a second front face that is opposite the first back face, and a first, a second, a third, and a fourth side surfaces that extend from the second front face to the first front face.

The system of claim 7 , wherein the first side surface is parallel with the first rail supporting surface, the second side surface is parallel with the second rail supporting surface, the third side surface is parallel with the third rail supporting surface, and the fourth side surface is parallel with the fourth rail supporting surface.

The system of claim 1 , wherein further comprising a threaded member that threadably engages engaged with the particular through hole to secure the rail stabilizer to the at least two vertical mounting posts, wherein the rail stabilizer is secured to the at least two vertical mounting posts via the threaded member.

10. A system for supporting equipment in a framing structure, the system comprising:

a server rack comprising a frame, the frame comprising at least two vertical mounting posts that extend from a top portion of the frame to a bottom portion of the frame, the at least two vertical mounting posts comprising vertically spaced through holes;

at least one rack mount rail comprising a rail and mounting hardware at a first end and a second end of the rail, the mounting hardware comprising rail engaging features that engage the vertically spaced through holes to transmit a weight of the at least one rack mount rail to the at least two vertical mounting posts, the at least one rack mount rail configured to support a rack mount chassis within the server rack; and

a rail stabilizer secured to a post through hole of the vertically spaced through holes that is above and unobstructed by the mounting hardware, the rail stabilizer supporting a position of the mounting hardware relative to the at least two vertical mounting posts, the rail stabilizer comprising:

a first body comprising:

a first front face having a first front center point;

a first back face having a first back center point, the first back face being opposite of and parallel to the first front face;

at least one first side surface comprising a first planar side surface and a second planar side surface extending between the first front face and the first back face, and

a through hole having a central axis and extending through the first body from the first front face to the first back face, the through hole being offset from the center points of the first front face and the first back face,

wherein a plurality of perpendicular distances extends from the central axis to points on the at least one first side surface, the plurality of perpendicular distances comprises a first distance from the central axis to the first planar side surface and a second distance from the central axis to the second planar side surface, wherein each of the plurality of perpendicular distances are all different from each other,

wherein the first body is secured to the post through hole such that the through hole of the first body and the post through hole are coaxially aligned, and wherein one of the at least one first side surface supports a top portion of the rail within the server rack,

wherein the first body is positionable relative to the post through hole in a plurality of rotational orientations so as to support the top portion of the rail within the server rack with the at least one first side surface, wherein the first body is rotatable about the central axis of the through hole to position the first body in the plurality of rotational orientations.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first body is configured to be secured to one of the at least two vertical mounting posts via a threaded member engaging the through hole of the first body and the post through hole.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the through hole of the first body is threaded.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first front face defines a height and a width, the height being about one inch, the width being about one inch.

The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one first side surface further comprises a third, and a fourth planar side surface, wherein the plurality of perpendicular distances further comprises a third distance from the central axis to the third planar side surface, and a fourth distance from the central axis to the fourth planar side surface.

The system of claim 14 , wherein, when the first body is secured to the post through hole such that the through hole of the first body and the post through hole are coaxially aligned, one of the first, the second, the third, or the fourth planar side surfaces supports the top portion of the rail within the server rack.

The system of claim 10 , further comprising a second body extending from the first front face, the second body comprising a second front face that is opposite the first back face, and at least one second side surface extending from the second front face to the first front face, the through hole extending through the second body and being centrally positioned on the second front face.

The system of claim 16 , wherein the at least one first side surface further comprises a third, and a fourth planar side surface, wherein the plurality of perpendicular distances further comprises a third distance from the central axis to the third planar side surface, and a fourth distance from the central axis to the fourth planar side surface,

wherein the first body is positionable relative to the post through hole in a plurality of rotational orientations so as to support the top portion of the rail within the server rack with the one of the first, the second, the third, or the fourth planar side surfaces, wherein the first body is rotatable about the central axis of the through hole to position the first body in the plurality of rotational orientations.
