Abstract

This spatial division multiplexing (SDM) in power-limited optical communication systems. In general, an SDM optical transmission system may be configured to increase data capacity over the data capacity of a non-SDM optical transmission system while maintaining power consumption at or below that of the existing non-SDM optical transmission system. To realize such an improvement in performance without increasing power consumption, an example SDM optical transmission may be constructed by reducing system bandwidth, reducing and/or altering equipment for filtering, reducing optical amplifier spacing, reducing operational amplifier power consumption, etc. In this manner, increased data transmission performance may be realized even where available power may be strictly limited.

Claims (25)

1. A method of constructing a power-limited space division-multiplexing (SDM) optical transmission system including a plurality of optical amplifiers, the method comprising:

providing a number of spatial dimensions in the SDM optical transmission system, the number of spatial dimensions being two or more;

spacing the plurality of optical amplifiers by an SDM amplifier spacing between the plurality of optical amplifiers to achieve a desired signal-to-noise ratio for the SDM system having the number of spatial dimensions, the SDM spacing being less than a single dimension amplifier spacing, the single dimension amplifier spacing being a spacing between the plurality of optical amplifiers required to achieve the desired signal-to-noise ratio if the SDM system included only a single dimension; and

configuring the plurality of optical amplifiers to provide an associated SDM amplifier power for the plurality of optical amplifiers to achieve the desired signal-to-noise ratio for the SDM system having the number of spatial dimensions, whereby the SDM amplifier power is less than a single dimension amplifier power, the single dimension amplifier power being an amplifier power for the plurality of optical amplifiers required to achieve the desired signal-to-noise ratio if the SDM system included only a single dimension.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the SDM amplifier spacing is nominally about half of the single dimension amplifier spacing.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the SDM amplifier spacing is nominally about 50 km and the single dimension amplifier spacing is nominally about T00 km.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the number of spatial dimensions are provided in an optical cable.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the optical cable comprises at least one optical fiber having the number of spatial dimensions.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the optical cable comprises a plurality of optical fibers, each of the plurality of optical fibers providing an associated one of the number of spatial dimensions.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of optical amplifiers is configured for amplifying the number of spatial dimensions.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing a spatial multiplexer configured to multiplex modulated optical signals on the number of spatial dimensions.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing a spatial demultiplexer configured to demultiplex modulated optical signals from the number of spatial dimensions.

10. A method of saving power for pumping a plurality of optical amplifiers in a power-limited space division-multiplexing (SDM) optical transmission system, the method comprising:

identifying a single dimension amplifier spacing and a single dimension amplifier power for the plurality of optical amplifiers to achieve a desired signal-to-noise ratio when the SDM system has only a single dimension;

providing a number of spatial dimensions in the SDM optical transmission system, the number of spatial dimensions being two or more;

spacing the plurality of optical amplifiers at an SDM amplifier spacing less than the single dimension amplifier spacing; and

configuring the plurality of optical amplifiers to have an SDM amplifier power less than the single dimension amplifier power, wherein the SDM amplifier spacing and the SDM amplifier power are selected to achieve the desired signal-to-noise ratio in the SDM system with the number of spatial dimensions.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the SDM amplifier spacing is nominally about half of the single dimension amplifier spacing.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the SDM amplifier spacing is nominally about 50 km and the single dimension amplifier spacing is nominally about I00 km.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the number of spatial dimensions are provided in an optical cable.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the optical cable comprises at least one optical fiber having the number of spatial dimensions.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the optical cable comprises a plurality of optical fibers, each of the plurality of optical fibers providing an associated one of the number of spatial dimensions.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein each of the plurality of optical amplifiers is configured for amplifying the number of spatial dimensions.

17. The method of claim 10 further comprising providing a spatial multiplexer configured to multiplex modulated optical signals on the number of spatial dimensions.

18. The method of claim 10 further comprising providing a spatial demultiplexer configured to demultiplex modulated optical signals from the number of spatial dimensions.
