Abstract

A fixation clamp for use in an external fixation system for holding bone fragments adjacent to each other with the help of fixation elements has at least one clamping assembly having a pair of jaws with at least two different size grooves to accommodate a bone fixation element such as a pin or rod. An alternate clamping assembly has at least three grooves wherein at least two of the grooves have a different size adapted to accommodate a correspondingly sized bone fixation element such as a bone pin. The longitudinal axes of the grooves define a polygon. The jaw pairs can be rotated about a central longitudinal axis to present different size reception cavities towards the pins or rocks depending on their diameter.

Claims (25)

1. A method for assembling an external fixation frame comprising:

obtaining a plurality of rods with different size cross-sections;

obtaining a clamping assembly comprising a first and a second jaw member wherein the first jaw member has a first, second and third groove, each groove having a different size cross-section and a central axis extending in a plane transverse to a central axis locking shaft extending through the first and second jaw member, the first, second and third grooves each intersecting an adjacent one of the first, second, or third grooves;

constructing an external fixation frame by positioning a first rod of the plurality of rods in the first groove in the first jaw member, the first rod in a first position with respect to the external fixation frame; and

determining the stiffness of the frame and if a stiffer frame is needed, replacing the first rod with a second rod having a larger cross-section than the first rod by removing the first rod from the first groove of the first jaw member, rotating the first jaw member of the clamping assembly about the locking shaft through an angle such that, the second groove of the first jaw member is placed it in the first position and inserting the larger second rod into the second groove.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the grooves in the first jaw member are circular or triangular in cross section.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the grooves in the first jaw member further comprise longitudinal ribs.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the clamping assembly comprises an anti-rotation element extending outwardly from one of the first and second jaw members into a complementary recess in the other of the first and second jaw members.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the grooves in the first jaw members are provided within an outer side surface of the first jaw member and spaced from the central locking shaft so that an outer surface of a rod pointing away from the locking shaft when inserted into one groove is flush with the corresponding outer side surface.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the first jaw member has three and only three grooves to accommodate a rod along a longitudinal axis of each groove in the first jaw member, wherein the longitudinal axes of said grooves form a triangle.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second jaw has grooves complementary to the grooves in the first jaw member and two facing grooves on the first and second jaw members have the same size.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the first and second jaw members are tightened by turning so as to clamp each.

9. A method for assembling an external fixation frame comprising:

obtaining a plurality of rods and pins with different size cross-sections;

obtaining at least one clamping assembly comprising a first clamp with a first and second jaw member and a second clamp with a third and fourth jaw member wherein the first jaw member has a first, second and third groove, each groove having a different size cross-section and a central axis extending in a plane transverse to a central axis of a locking shaft extending through the first, second, third and fourth jaw members, the first, second and third grooves each intersecting an adjacent one of the first, second, or third grooves;

inserting a pin into a fractured bone;

constructing an external fixation frame by positioning a first rod in the first groove in the first jaw so that the first rod is in a first position with respect to the external fixation frame, and inserting the pin into the second clamp;

tightening the first and second clamps to lock the rod and pin in position; and

determining the stiffness of the frame and if a stiffer frame is needed, replacing the first rod in the first clamp with a second rod having a larger cross-section than the first rod by removing the first rod from the first groove of the first jaw member, rotating the first jaw member of the clamping assembly about the locking shaft through an angle such that the second groove of the first jaw member is placed it in the first position and inserting the larger second rod into the second groove.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the grooves in the first jaw member are circular or triangular in cross section.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the grooves in the first jaw member further comprise longitudinal ribs.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the clamping assembly comprises an anti-rotation element extending outwardly from one of the first and second jaw members into a complementary recess in the other of the first and second jaw members.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the grooves in the first jaw member are provided within an outer side surface of the first jaw member and spaced from the central locking shaft so that an outer surface of a rod pointing away from the locking shaft when inserted into one groove is flush with the corresponding outer side surface.

14. The method of claim 9 wherein the first jaw member has three and only three grooves to accommodate a rod along a longitudinal axis of each groove in the first jaw member, wherein the longitudinal axes of said grooves form a triangle.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the second jaw has grooves complementary to the grooves in the first jaw member and two facing grooves on the first and second jaw members have the same size.
