Abstract

A game machine is provided. The machine comprises a display and a controller. The display is configured to display a plurality of symbol cells displayed in a grid. The controller is configured to: establish a first reel layout and a second reel layout, the second reel layout having a blank symbol in a plurality of consecutive symbol positions and at least one identical symbol in a plurality of consecutive symbol positions; randomly shift the second reel layout by a number of symbol positions in relation to the first reel layout; combine the second reel layout with the first reel layout to create a combined reel layout; and assign the combined reel layout to one of the reel strips.

Claims (43)

1. A game machine, comprising:

an acceptor device configured to accept physical media indicative of a monetary value to establish a credit balance;

a display configured to display a plurality of symbol cells, the plurality of symbol cells defining a column, the column having an associated reel, the reel having an associated reel strip, the reel strip having an associated first reel layout, the first reel layout having a plurality of symbol positions and a game symbol displayed in each of the symbol cells in a predetermined order, and

a controller coupled to the acceptor device and the display, the controller configured to:

establish a second reel layout, the second reel layout having at least one symbol position with an associated blank symbol and at least two consecutive symbol positions having associated game symbols;

combine the first and second reel layouts to establish a third reel layout; and

replace the first reel layout with the third reel layout by associating the third reel layout with the reel strip, wherein the controller provides a video slot game utilizing the third layout, wherein the controller, in providing the video slot game, utilizes the reel with the associated third reel layout to simulate a rotating reel and selects a stop position of the reel to determine an outcome of the video slot game.

2. The game machine, as in claim 1 , the controller further configured to shift the second reel layout by a number of symbol positions relative to the first reel layout prior to the placing the second reel layout over the first reel layout.

3. The game machine, as in claim 2 , wherein the number of positions the second reel is shifted is randomly determined.

4. The game machine, as in claim 1 , wherein the game symbol in each of the at least two consecutive reel positions in the second reel layout is selected from a subset of available game symbols.

5. The game machine, as in claim 1 , wherein the game symbols in the at least two consecutive reel positions in the second reel layout are identical.

6. The game machine, as in claim 5 , wherein the identical game symbol in the at least two consecutive reel positions in the second reel layout is selected from a subset of available game symbols.

7. The game machine, as in claim 6 , wherein each available game symbol within the subset of available game symbols is assigned a probability of selection.

8. The game machine, as in claim 1 , the game machine further including a plurality of second reel layouts and the controller further configured to select one second reel layout from the plurality of second reel layouts.

9. The game machine, as in claim 7 , wherein each second reel layout has a different associated game symbol within the at least two consecutive symbol positions.

10. The game machine, as in claim 7 , wherein each second reel layout has a different number of consecutive symbol positions.

11. The game machine, as in claim 7 , wherein each second reel layout is assigned a probability of selection and the controller is configured to select a second reel layout as a function of the probability.

12. A method of implementing a game machine including a display and a controller, the method comprising the steps of:

accepting physical media indicative of a monetary value and establishing a credit value;

displaying, through the display, a plurality of symbol cells, the plurality of symbol cells defining a column, the column having an associated reel, the reel having an associated reel strip, the reel strip having an associated first reel layout, the first reel layout having a plurality of symbol positions and a game symbol displayed in each of the symbol cells in a predetermined order;

establishing, through the controller, a second reel layout, the second reel layout having at least one symbol position with an associated blank symbol and at least two consecutive symbol positions having associated game symbols;

combining, through the controller, the second reel layout and the first reel layout to generate a third reel layout;

replacing, through the controller, the first reel layout with the third reel layout by associated the third reel layout with the reel strip; and,

providing, by the controller, a video slot game utilizing the third layout, wherein the controller, in providing the video slot game, utilizes the reel with the associated third reel layout to simulate a rotating reel and selects a stop position of the reel to determine an outcome of the video slot game.

13. The method, as in claim 12 , further including the step of shifting, through the controller, the second reel layout by a number of symbol positions in relation to the first reel layout prior to the placing the second reel layout over the first reel layout.

14. The method, as in claim 13 , further including the step of randomly determining, through the controller, the number of positions the second reel is shifted.

15. The method, as in claim 12 , wherein the game symbol in each of the at least two consecutive reel positions in the second reel layout is selected from a subset of available game symbols.

16. The method, as in claim 12 , wherein the game symbols in the at least two consecutive reel positions in the second reel layout are identical.

17. The method, as in claim 16 , wherein the identical game symbol in the at least two consecutive reel positions in the second reel layout is selected from a subset of available game symbols.

18. The method, as in claim 17 , further including the step of assigning, through the controller, a probability of selection to each available game symbol within the subset of available game symbols.

19. The method, as in claim 12 , the game machine further including a plurality of second reel layouts and further including the step of selecting, through the controller, the second reel layout from a plurality of second reel layouts.

20. The method, as in claim 19 , wherein each second reel layout has a different associated game symbol within the at least two consecutive symbol positions.

21. The method, as in claim 19 , wherein each second reel layout has a different number of consecutive symbol positions.

22. The method, as in claim 19 , further including the steps of:

assigning, through the controller, each second reel layout a probability of selection; and

selecting, through the controller, a second reel layout as a function of the probability.

23. A non-transitory information recording medium containing a computer readable program that functions as a game machine comprising:

an acceptor device configured to accept physical media indicative of a monetary value to establish a credit balance;

a display configured to display a plurality of symbol cells, the plurality of symbol cells defining a column, the column having an associated reel, the reel having an associated reel strip, the reel strip having an associated first reel layout, the first reel layout having a plurality of symbol positions and a game symbol displayed in each of the symbol cells in a predetermined order, and

a controller coupled to the acceptor device and the display, the controller configured to:

establish a second reel layout, the second reel layout having at least one symbol position with an associated blank symbol and at least two consecutive symbol positions having associated game symbols;

combine the second reel layout over the first reel layout to generate a third reel layout; and

replace the third reel layout with the first reel layout by associating the third reel layout with the reel strip, wherein the controller provides a video slot game utilizing the third layout, wherein the controller, in providing the video slot game, utilizes the reel with the associated third reel layout to simulate a rotating reel and selects a stop position of the reel to determine an outcome of the video slot game.
