Abstract

A system and method for managing the migration of software components among test servers that form a distributed software test environment to ensure that the software components in each of the test servers represent a production environment except for software components being tested. The system further ensures that component changes rolled out into production are not overridden when multiple update requests are made for the same component.

21 . A method, comprising:

a computing system receiving information indicating that a software package is to be tested in a plurality of test environments, wherein the software package includes a component that has been modified relative to an earlier version of the component;

the computing system determining that a first test computer system in the plurality of test environments is executing a process that uses the earlier version of the component and that a second test computer system in the plurality of test environments is not executing any process that uses the earlier version of the component;

in response to the determining, the computing system deploying the software package to the second test computer system for testing; and

based on information indicating the process on the first test computer system is no longer executing the process using the earlier version of the component, the computing system deploying the software package to the first test computer system for testing.

22 . The method as recited in claim 21 , further comprising the computing system testing the modified version of the component in accordance with a test sequence that specifies testing the software package on the first and second test computer systems.

23 . The method as recited in claim 21 , wherein a test sequence for the software package comprises an order in which the modified component is to be tested in a plurality of test computer systems which correspond to the plurality of test environments.

24 . The method as recited in claim 21 , further comprising implementing a prohibition on deploying the software package to the first test computer system responsive to determining that the first test computer system is executing the process using the earlier version of the component.

25 . The method as recited in claim 24 , further comprising lifting the prohibition on deploying the software package to the first test computer system responsive to determining that the first test computer system is no longer executing the process using the earlier version of the component.

26 . The method as recited in claim 25 , further comprising:

deploying the software package to the first test computer system responsive to lifting the prohibition; and

replacing the modified version of the component a production version of the component responsive to testing the software package on both of the first and second computer systems.

The method as recited in claim 21 , wherein the software package has a priority level relative to one or more other software packages that also have respective priority levels, and wherein an order of testing the software package relative to the other software package is dependent on their respective priority levels.

28 . The method as recited in claim 21 , further comprising the computing system designating the component as a production component responsive to successful completion of a test sequence.

29 . The method as recited in claim 21 , further comprising the computing system notifying an owner of the modified version of the component that a different modification of the component exists.

30 . The method as recited in claim 21 , further comprising:

the computing system storing the software package in a staging area based on a prohibition against deploying the software package to the first computer system;

removing the software package from the staging area responsive to lifting the prohibition; and

subsequent to completion of testing of the software package on the first computer system, the computing system returning the software package to the staging area prior to deployment of the software package to a third test computer system.

31 . A system comprising:

a processor; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions stored therein that, when executed by the processor, cause the system to:

receive information indicating that a software package is to be tested in a plurality of test environments, wherein the software package includes a component that has been modified relative to an earlier version of the component;

determine that a first test computer system in the plurality of test environments is executing a process that uses the earlier version of the component and that a second test computer system in the plurality of test environments is not executing any processes that use the earlier version of the component;

deploy the software package to the second test computer system for testing responsive to determining that the first test computer system is executing the process that uses the earlier version of the component; and

deploy the software package to the first test computer system for testing responsive to determining that the first test computer system is no longer executing the process that uses the earlier version of the component.

32 . The system as recited in claim 31 , wherein the system is further configured to:

implement a prohibition on deploying the software package to the first test computer system responsive to determining that the first test computer system is executing the process that uses the earlier version of the component;

lift the prohibition on deploying the software package to the first test computer system responsive to determining that the first test computer system is no longer executing the process that uses the earlier version of the component;

deploy the software package to the first test computer system responsive to lifting the prohibition; and

replace the modified version of the component with a production version of the component responsive to testing the software package on both of the first and second test computer systems.

33 . The system as recited in claim 31 , wherein the system is configured to designate the component as a production component responsive to successful completion of a test sequence.

34 . The system as recited in claim 31 , wherein the system is configured to notify an owner of the modified version of the component that a different modification of the component exists.

35 . The system as recited in claim 31 , wherein the software package has a priority level relative to other software packages that also have respective priority levels, and wherein an order of testing the software package relative to the other software packages is dependent upon their respective priority levels.

36 . A non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, when executed on a computer system, cause the computer system to:

receive information indicating that a software package is to be tested in a plurality of test environments, wherein the software package includes a component that has been modified relative to an earlier version of the component;

determine that a first test computer system in the plurality of test environments is executing a process that uses the earlier version of the component and that a second test computer system in the plurality of test environments is not executing any processes that use the earlier version of the component;

deploy the software package to the second test computer system for testing responsive to determining that the first test computer system is executing the process that uses the earlier version of the component; and

deploy the software package to the first test computer system for testing responsive to determining that the first test computer system is no longer executing the process that uses the earlier version of the component.

37 . The computer readable medium as recited in claim 36 , further comprising instruction stored thereon that cause testing of the modified version the component in accordance with a test sequence that specifies testing of the software package on the first and second test computer systems.

38 . The computer readable medium as recited in claim 37 , wherein the test sequence for the software package comprises an order in which the modified test component of the component is to be tested in a plurality of test computer system which correspond to the plurality of test environments.

The computer readable medium as recited in claim 36 , wherein the software package has a priority level relative to one or more other software packages that have respective priority levels, wherein an order of testing of the software packages relative to the other software packages is dependent on their respective priority levels.

40 . The computer readable medium as recited in claim 36 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the computer system, designate the component as a production component responsive to successful completion of a test sequence.
