Abstract

A method of separating heavy water from normal through application of acoustic pressure shock waves to a fluid including heavy water and normal water and recovering separated normal water.

Claims (23)

1. A method of separating heavy water from normal water comprising applying separation acoustic pressure shock waves to a fluid including heavy water and normal water in a separation enclosure of a separation unit, wherein the fluid has been chilled to produce heavy water ice crystals, separating the heavy water ice crystals from the normal water by application of the shock waves, and recovering heavy water from the heavy water ice crystals separated from the normal water.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein applying acoustic pressure shock waves mix the fluid during said chilling process to increase speed of crystallization of the heavy water to ice crystals.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the separation enclosure is a nuclear power plant.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the separation acoustic pressure shock waves are applied to the fluid downward in the direction of gravity as the fluid flows through the separation unit, pushing heavy water ice crystals in a flow below a normal water flow.

5. The method of claim 2 , further comprising applying the separation acoustic pressure shock waves to the fluid downward in the direction of gravity as the fluid flows through the separation unit, pushing heavy water ice crystals in a flow below a normal water flow and recovering the heavy water through a heavy water outlet and the normal water through a normal water outlet.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein acoustic pressure shock waves are applied to mix the fluid during said cooling to increase speed of crystallization of the heavy water to ice crystals.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the separation enclosure is a nuclear power plant.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the separation acoustic pressure shock waves are applied to the fluid downward in the direction of gravity as the fluid flows through the separation unit, pushing heavy water ice crystals in a flow below a normal water flow.

10. The method of claim 2 , further comprising providing hollow cold seeds in the fluid during said chilling.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the separation enclosure is a nuclear power plant.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising applying the separation acoustic pressure shock waves to the fluid downward in the direction of gravity as the fluid flows through the separation unit, pushing heavy water ice crystals in a flow below a normal water flow and recovering the heavy water through a heavy water outlet and the normal water through a normal water outlet.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising applying the separation acoustic pressure shock waves to the fluid downward in the direction of gravity as the fluid flows through the separation unit, pushing heavy water ice crystals in a flow below a normal water flow and recovering the heavy water through a heavy water outlet and the normal water through a normal water outlet.

14. A heavy water and normal water separation system comprising:

a separation unit with a top portion and bottom portion, wherein the separation unit includes a fluid inlet, a heavy water outlet near the bottom portion of the unit and a normal water outlet nearer the top portion of the unit;

a source of a mixture of heavy water and normal water couple to the fluid inlet; a cooling means couple to the separation unit for chilling the mixture to produce heavy water ice crystals; and

one or more acoustic pressure shock wave devices couple to the separation unit to direct shock waves downward from the top portion of the separation unit, to push ice water crystals to the outlet near the bottom.

15. The separation system of claim 14 , wherein the separation unit is a nuclear power plant separation unit.

16. The system of claim 15 , further comprising a heavy water collection containment coupled to the heavy water outlet.

17. The system of claim 16 , further comprising a second separation unit including one or more additional shock wave devices coupled between the heavy water outlet and the heavy water collection containment.

18. The system of claim 16 , further comprising a normal water collection containment coupled to the normal water outlet.

19. The system of claim 14 , further comprising further comprising a heavy water collection containment coupled to the heavy water outlet and a normal water collection containment coupled to the normal water outlet.

20. The system of claim 19 , further comprising a second separation unit including one or more additional shock wave devices coupled between the heavy water outlet and the heavy water collection containment.
